Look for Less: Megan Young Designs

Last week my jaw dropped when I saw the work of Megan Young Designs featured on Daniela’s blog.

I loved how the space had neutral wall paint, rug and furniture picks yet it was full of color in the accessories. I space I would totally love to call my own.

So I decided to recreate the look myself on a budget.

1. Amazing fretwork style mirror for $427. Love the scale and detailing on it.

2. Clean lined console that is all wood and can be repainted in Benjamin Moore Slate Teal.

3. Natural fiber storage baskets for underneath the console.

4. Cozy leather and hemp rug for seating area. Only $92!

5. Reproduction Wassily chair in brown. *Checked for a camel colored version and came up empty handed, but perhaps you can have it recovered in this camel colored leather.

6. I would probably have one splurge and pick up a Chiang Mai Dragon pillow, but if I wanted to save my pennies I would use this fabric instead. It has a similar vibe and is only $15 a yard. Also available in a red background. Of course seeing this little peek into the room made me completely curious as to what the rest of the space looked like. Let me tell you it did not disappoint.

Check it out:

Check out the close up on the chair:

Love the pop of blue in the piping!

Bravo Megan! Great job!

Weekend Recap: 27 weeks and counting

As you all know we got a little surprise in April and this past week I hit my 27th week. This coming Wednesday I will be entering my 3rd trimester and to celebrate a bit we went in this weekend for a 3d sonogram!

Of course while the little peanut has been moving non-stop he decided to take a little nap during this session so I had to do lots of moving to try and get a shot of him.

Here is a pic of one of the best ones:

Isn’t he sweet looking? Not sure why, but he enjoys having his little foot right up to his face so that’s what you see on the left side. Throughout the session he either had a foot up against his face or a foot and hand. He must be camera shy.

The rest of the weekend was spent cheering on his Daddy and Auntie as they ran the Hampton’s Half Marathon! (Pictures to come on facebook) The remainder of the weekend was spent recovering. Even though I didn’t run it I’ve been dealing with lots of horrible leg cramps* and I’ve been trying to stay off my feet and ease the pain.

Don’t worry I managed to sneak in a fun and easy DIY project that I will be posting about tomorrow!

*Any tips for dealing with leg cramps? I’ve tried upping my water intake, eating banana’s, light exercise and even sleeping with a bar of Ivory soap (don’t ask) and nothing has eased the pain.

Look for Less: JA Havenhurst Lamp

I absolutely adore everything in Jonathan Adler’s shop. What I don’t love is the sometimes high price tag. Every now and then it’s fun to splurge on a dream item or two, but for those of us that don’t want to sacrifice style for budget I love to share my look for less finds.

Jonathan Adler’s Havenhurst has been on my dream list for a while. Love the high gloss finish on it and the fun shape:

It retails for $425, which isn’t horrible for a piece of an accent table, but a bit high for a table lamp.

Enter my look for less:

Not identical, but diffinately in the same family and it’s only $82!

*If you want to buy the look for less option I would check the link every couple of days, because yesterday it was coming up for only $58 and then today jumped to $82, which is still a good deal.

**Have been having major hosting issues with godaddy. For some reason they are no longer letting my upload images bigger than 300 x 300. Not great for a blogger. So I’ve spent the last two days trying to find a new hosting service and web manager. It looks like a solution has been found and my blog will be migrating over to the new server today. Fingers crossed all goes as planned!

Guest Posting at Simplified Bee

Hi Loves,

Forgot to mention that I was asked to guest post on Cristin’s What would you do series?

For this round up we were asked to design a room around this inlay table:

Head on over and check out what I did with it.

P.S. Having massive technical issues with wordpress since yesterday. For some reason wordpress will no longer let me upload images larger than 300 x 300. I keep getting an http image error message that pops up. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this or can you recommend a coder/programmer that works with wordpress. Totally stressed.

Baby Talk: The Inspiration

Now that our shower has come and gone I’m starting to get into full on nesting mode. For the last couple of weeks a design plan has started to come together, but I have yet to pull the trigger on anything and I’m starting to freak out that we only have a little over 90 days until the newest family member arrives.

I figured I should start with the inspiration behind the look of the nursery. Small back story: My mom has many talents, but doing DIY projects/Arts and Crafts has never been her thing. While she was pregnant with me though she ventured out of her comfort zone and made a needlepoint baby bag. All these years later (Ah! 30) the needlepoint bag is still around and a couple of months ago I found it.

Isn’t it sweet looking? It pulled at my heart strings that my mom had made it for me and immediately wanted it somewhere in the nursery. Little did I know that it would quickly become the inspiration for the space.

I was still a little on the fence about all of the colors in needlepoint working in a room until I  saw everything come together when I saw this color story in Hampton Designer Showhouse:

{Designed by the amazingly talented Tobi Fairley}

Isn’t it stunning. I love the unexpected color combo of emerald green, melon and lemon. Beautiful. Seeing it made me realize that all of the colors in my needlepoint really would work together in a room. All that was missing from the room was the pop of blue that my needlepoint has.

 I then started going through my fabric swatches and played around with some combo’s and came up with a favorite:

I finally get to use one of my favorite fabrics:

{Arbre Chinois in Meadow by Schumacher}

It took Jon a little while to warm up to the fabric, but eventually he agreed that it would work and it will be used in small doses. With having a boy I know my future holds lots of boy related activities/colors/themes so I figured this nursery was my only chance to make his space not scream boy, but happy baby.

I can’t wait to get started on it and share the process with all of you. Are you loving the direction I’m going in? Please say yes or else this hormonal preggo lady will start to tear up. JK….kinda.

British Imports

Today marks the day I’ve been dreading for the last couple of months. My little sister is off this morning to London for about 9 months to get her Masters at the London School of Economics. Of course I’m proud of her, but I was totally sad to see her go. The only thing keeping me somewhat sane today is that she’ll be back in early December for a month during her Christmas Break.

{Here is the stinker that is leaving us for the UK today. For more shower pictures head here.}

Since London is on my brain today I thought it would be fun to spotlight some of my favorite British imports.

1.UK Based designer Nina Campbell has the most amazing line of wallpaper. My current favorite is her Farfalla pattern. How pretty are those butterflies! Caitlin recently used it in her office and I’m even more in love now.

2. Anytime I travel somewhere new I always hit a supermarket and stock up on whatever candies/chocolates are available only in that area. I know Cadburyis available in the states, but I love all of the different types of bar that are only available in the UK. Yum.

3. One of my favorite things about design work is finding the perfect fabric. I adore all of the hand printed fabrics designed by UK based GP & J Baker. They have stunning patterns that come in beautiful color stories. Magnolia, which is featured above is one of my favorites.

4. I love reading. I constantly have one or two stashed in my purse. I even bought 7 books with me when we went on our Honeymoon! One of my favorite series by Jennifer Donnelly. The series starts out with The Tea Rose and then continues with The Winter Rose and finishes off with The Wild Rose.

5. In searching for unique items for the baby I stumbled upon on all of these cute hand crocheted toys. Sadly they were all in pounds and only available in the UK. I of course started bombarding my sister with links of all of the lovely gifts she can buy her new nephew when she arrives in London. Today though I found a UK site that ships to the US! So if you love that elephant pull toy as much as me you can pick it up here.

6. I’m not a big coffee person so I love the British tradition of tea time. What better way to have your tea than to drink it in a Wedgwood greek key tea cup.

7. I think at one point we have all dreamed of owning a SMEG refrigerator. SMEG is a UK based company, but in recent years you have now been able to purchase them via Sears. So pretty. I want one in every color.

We are having a dreary London sort of day in NY today. I sort of feel like stuffy my feelings with Cadbury chocolates, tea and perhaps watching Love Actually on repeat. Have already called my sister and told her I totally wouldn’t hate it if she changed her mind and wanted to hop on a plane back home when she arrives to London later today.

So in order to cheer me up lets think of wonderful treasures that are only available in the UK that I can ask dear sister to purchase for me and bring back to the states.  Any favorite items?

Weekend Recap: It Poured!

After weeks of planning and preparing it showered this weekend at my house! I don’t do well with surprises.  It makes me completely anxious and stressed so I knew about the big day and even helped with details. Saturday morning I took off to get my hair done while my Mom, MIL, sisters and SIL’s got to work on the decor.

Welcome to the party:

{We used some of the elephants from my living room to place some balloons to alert party guests where the party was.}

To the tent:

{We were able to get a steal of fabric from Duralee’s outlet so we had custom tablecloths and napkins due to my MIL’s seamstress skills.}

Celebrate the Peanut centerpieces:

{Originally we were going to do glass cubes for the flower centerpieces and place a smaller cube in a larger cube in order to fill the middle with peanuts. Well that didn’t work out as planned. 2 weeks ago we realized we needed a plan B. Christmas Tree Shop to the rescue with these cute striped palls. As an interior decorator I have a resale license so I was able to place an order for flowers at a wholesaler and then spent Friday afternoon putting together all of the centerpieces. We still wanted to keep with the peanut theme so Jon thought of the idea of sprinkling them on the table.}

Close up of centerpiece:

{We went bright and happy with our color story for the shower. So for our centerpieces we went with mini orange roses, cotton candy pink carnations, green mini mums, yellow dahlias and white hydrangeas. }

Meal Time:

{We had custom menu’s designed by the lovely Mattie at Puddleduck Designs}

Since the tent in the backyard was only 20 x 20 we had our own personal canopy set up on our drive way and that is where the food & drink tables were laid out.

Close up of our appetizers:

{How cute is that crudite display! I munched on it all day. I think guests thought it was simply too pretty to eat, because I was left with tons of leftovers. }

We went with a signature drink for the party and decided to use Eddie Ross’s No Fail Sangria recipe and it was a hit!

{We purchased mason jars to use for the sangria and then as a party favor for guests along with striped straws from Shop Sweet Lulu and all of the printable paper accessories like food tents, bingo cards, water bottle labels, straw flags were all done by the very talented Meghan from When I grow up…}

Close up:

{Check out my elephant ring. Little elephant details were all throughout the shower.}

Water bottle labels:

{Water bottle labels designed by Meghan and placed in another find from Christmas Tree Shop. They had cute hat boxes in bright colors that we went to be used for gift wrapping, but we used them for display purposes throughout the shower.}

Activities: We wanted to have something to entertain guests at the party so we went with a onesie and bib decorating station. I didn’t want to overwhelm guests with paints and didn’t love the look of fabric markers so we used fabric instead. I went through my fabric closet and then also picked up fabric squares and JoAnn’s and ironed on Heat ‘n Bond Ultra Iron On Adhesive roll to all of the fabric. Guests could then use stencils we provided or cut something free hand and remove paper packing and then lightly iron for 8 seconds to set fabric.

People loved this idea and we got so many chic onesies and bibs made that look like something out of etsy.

Jon’s sister got the ball rolling with this cute bow tie onesie:

Half way through the party we had a nice collection going on:

Baby Pavone is going to have a posse of ladies around him at all time. Check out his aunts that worked their little butts off getting everything prepared for the shower:

Gift time!

{How cute is this diaper cake. When I first stopped it I assumed someone purchased it a store already done up. Later on though I found out that my sisters had made it themselves. I loved all of the orange, elephants and monkeys. So cute! }

We played a little Baby Shower Bingo to make the gift opening process a little more fun.

{Bingo cards designed by Meghan}

Jon originally was going to head out and run some errands during the shower and then return during the end, but he ended up staying the whole time instead and it was great. He got to mingle with the guests, help with setting out food and took part in opening the gifts.

The crowd loved him. His favorite gift had to be My Breast Friend:

In between opening gifts we had a little lunch. We went with an assortment of Panini’s and pasta salads:

We did a huge dessert spread:

{We had Funfetti cupcakes, Smore’s bars, Lemon Bars, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies, Rainbow Cookie cupcakes, Elephant shaped lemon iced cookies, and a DIY Smore’s station with traditional and extra large marshmallows, 3 different types of graham crackers and 10 different types of chocolate to pick from. Yum!}

We have a fire pit in our backyard and some extra long marshmallow skewers so Jon became the marshmallow roaster and helped guests make their custom Smore’s.

Jon and I had a lovely time and were so thankful for both of our Mom’s for hosting the shower.

 It was so nice to be surrounded by such love and we know this little boy arriving in December is going to be one lucky guy.

Before we knew it the hours had pasted and it was time to bring in all of the gifts:

A big thank you to everyone that helped with the shower from the talented ladies that helped with my paper goods to all of the lovely ladies in our family that helped host/plan/prep/produce the shower.

Whew what a long post. By the end of the evening we were all wiped:

I hope you all had a lovely weekend as well!

Franki Says Relax

I’m wiped! My shower is this coming Saturday. We have never had a big event at our house so the Mom’s decided it would be nice to have it at our home. I’m so excited for everyone to come over and see all of the work we have done. The only downside has been all of the cleaning I’ve had to do.

I so wish I had a lovely nook like this in my house to lay down and rest:

{Design by Rachel Halvorson}

If you have a second today you must head over to Rachel’s blog and check out the rest of this stunning home that she is working on. Jaw dropping!

I will be sure to report back on Monday with lots of pictures!

Styling: Collected Accessories

Like we have discussed in the past styling a bookcase can be a daunting task. I believe that a bookcase should be a mix of books, storage solutions, and personal accessories that you have gathered. I also love some fresh flowers thrown in the mix if space allows. The bookcase below is a perfect example of a little bit of everything:

When trying to style a bookcase for a client I find that the hardest task is adding in those personal accessories that I’m hoping everyone has stored away in a box. 90 % of the time the client loves the idea of using accessories in a bookcase, but they rarely have anything other than a picture frame or two.

One of my favorite sources to order accessories from that look like they have been gathered throughout the years yet don’t break the bank is C.S. Post & Co.

Here are some of my favorites and I made sure everything was $20 or less!

1. Textured Porcelain Vases

2. Wire Canisters available in two sizes.

3. Ceramic Tealight Holder

4. Shagreen Round Box

5. Giant Iron Jack

6. Rustic Metal Baskets

 They carry a lot more accessories online at some higher price points, but the majority of them are under a $100.

Any secret gems where you purchase your collected accessories?

Fall Fabric Finds

Fall is quickly approaching and I’m already set to whip out the sweaters, going on walks with leaves on the ground and sip all of the hot apple cider I can. I’m already seeing myself leaning towards warming color combos in fabrics and my favorite color story of the moment is tomato red, navy or steel blue and lemongrass green.

I scoured the web and put together some of my favorite combos:

Row 1:Peeps Illusion, Olana Oaf Jewel,Luminary in Henna

Row 2:Theory Abstract,Hot House Flowers in Russet,Theory Geometric

Row 3: Heriloom Marquis Gold,Solar Flair in Henna
Belfast Stripe

Are you feeling yourself drawn to warmer colors as the crisp Fall weather approaches?
