I have a couple more easy DIY gifts for the holiday season.
I have seen many framed baby outfits, but for Hudson’s room I wanted to something a bit more updated then the classic framed outfit.
Enter those cheesy acrylic frames with the cardboard backing that I remember from the 80’s. I’m sure you all had one in your room once upon a time with a framed poster of your favorite star. Here is how to take that frame with a couple of additions and turn into a new classic.
Here are the supplies you’ll need:
–See Thru Box Frame I used a 16″ x 20″ for my outfit.
-Acrylic sheet (Available at Home Depot/Lowes in their screened door/window area. You can have them cut it to size or pick up one of the sized pieces. I picked up a 16″ x 20″ sheet.
– Cardboard
-Special outfit you want to remember
– Drill
– Spraypaint
–Acrylic Cement
Once you have all of your supplies here is how you get the look:
Step 1: In order to make sure your outfit holds it form in the shadow box you need some sort of structure to keep it form. We had cardboard around so we used that to make a template.
Once your outfit is ready you can put it aside and work on the backing piece for the shadow box. Since those acrylic frames come with a cardboard backing piece you need a new backing. Enter the acrylic sheet you purchased.
Step 4: In order to hang the piece on the wall you need to drill a hole into the acrylic sheet for your nail to go through.
Step 5: Now if you like the completely lucite look you don’t need to paint it, but I wanted a punch of color so I used spraypaint to give me my dose of color. We originally sanded our piece of acrylic, but we also tried it on a piece with no sanding and there was no difference. Spray a couple of coats of spray paint. One side of the acrylic sheet may bubble a bit, but the opposite side will look like slick painted glass. It’s amazing!
Step 6: Once your sheet ( backing) is dry it’s time to adhere the outfit. You simply use a hot glue gun to adhere the outfit onto the non painted side of the acrylic sheet.
Step 7: Add a perimeter of acrylic cement to your backing piece, which now has the outfit attached to it. Don’t use another other glue must be the acrylic cement that is used solely for attaching acrylic to acrylic. You will have a couple of seconds of wiggle room to get it on properly.
Step 8: Add a thin line of the cement. You don’t want to have excess spill out the sides when applying the top part of the acrylic box frame. It sets rather quickly and strongly. We let it set overnight to fully cure.
Step 9: Yay to Jon for taking my nutty idea and loose instructions and turning into this beautiful piece of art and memory of little Hudson’s newborn days.
A simple nail will hold into place.
Don’t you think this would make a great a thoughtful gift?
You’re a freaking genius! I’ve been holding on to this idea for going on two years now to do in my babies’s rooms. I LOVE the idea but was never into the final look of a shadow box. Just not my thing. Enter acrylics and modern sleek look. Genius! I’m going to do this as my first project of the new years. Thanks!
Exactly what I needed!! I have something from my girls that I want to frame but shadow boxes are so expensive (the ones I like anyway). I like how modern this looks and really shows off what you are framing. LOVE!!!
I love this! I am pregnant with my second child and first little girl and I can’t wait to see her in some of the smocked dresses I wore when I was a baby. Then I want to preserve one of them with my favorite outfit from when my son was a baby. This is perfect for the more modern look of our home.

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
Fall is the perfect season to host an outdoor movie night in your backyard! It’s that time of year when outdoor furniture is still outside and it gets dark earlier than the summer which means your little kiddos can enjoy the movie night as well. It’s so nice to transform your backyard with cozy blankets, […]
Can you believe it’s already November? Before we know it Thanks No. 1 Modern bar cart with patterned sides that looks great as is, but would also look amazing painted a pop of color! Plus it’s only $157. No. 2 This lucite bar cart is a personal favorite of mine. Look at those chic lines! […]
For the longest time our backyard was mainly just grass and a little small area where we laid down some pavers so that we could set out a little plastic table/chairs during the summer. Not exactly ideal for entertaining. For the past couple of years we have wanted to build a deck and enjoy the […]
I for one love this idea. I must tell you.
Love this! What a great job you and your hubby did.

I would like to order a box for a dress. 40″ x 40″ x 3″ What would this cost? Thank you-Cathy
A link to where to buy the acrylic box would be useful – my searches have been pretty unsuccessful so far
There is a link under see thru box frame. Hope that helps. C
Great job! I love that beaded chandelier. Is that a DIY? Or did you purchase that?
