I don’t know what it is about Anthropologie, but I always want whatever is in their stores. The second I step into one I’m checking out not only what is new in stock, but what the store displays look like. I love the way they set up all their home items, because they always make me want to move right in. I constantly think about ways that I could incorporate some of their decorating techniques into my design style, but I’ve had to face the facts that I’m just not cool enough. You know what I mean. Anthropologie to me is like that cool girl you know the one that just oozes a certain, "je ne sais quoi". She is a bit Bohemian, a world traveler, gorgeous, smart, funny and always in the know of what is going to be trend, but to her it’s just what she likes and by the time it turns into a trend she’s already on to the next thing.
When I’m in Anthropologie I tend to pick up mostly small Home items so as to not hurt my wallet, yet I still get to satisfy my want and walk out with a small shopping bag that warms my heart. I have bits of Anthro throughout my home, but I just use them to add a little bit of charm to my existing design.
I always dream about having different homes for all my different design loves. I love the organic look of Anthro’s design. The beat up floors, the walls that look like they have been their for decades, the fabulous mix of old and new that is a just a perfect blend and comes up so chic yet homey.
While doing some online shopping the other day I stumbled upon this gem on Anthropologie’s site: Open House.
It gives you a virtual tour of different rooms in a house decorated fully in Anthropologie items. It’s a great source of inspiration for someone that thinks you can’t mix patterns or bold colors. Not only do they provide you with pictures, but there are also tips/videos on how to achieve this look in your own home.

Oh what yummy images! Since I only have one home to my name I’ll have to get my Anthro fix by reminding myself that if I saw my water damaged wood floors in my downstairs bathroom at Anthropologie I would be in love with it.
Like you I love that store and could outfit my entire apartment in it. But alas I don’t have that kind of money or that kind of space. One day I will, but thankfully their website allows us all to dream up our dream spaces!
I love the site too, and get almost daily emails from them! I was really surprised when I was reading in the magazine:”Where women create” about who their designer is… I will have to dig back in my pile to find her again. She was NOT what you would expect her to be at all! I too see the Anthro Girl to be like you described, when in fact her home/studio? looks like… How can I say this kindly… A disheveled artist in mourning/mess! … dark, mysteriously crazy-ness of a place! Not that my art studio looks any better!
oh well, it just shows you can’t always live the fantasy… LOL
I echo your sentiments about Anthropologie EXACTLY….I was laughing when reading your post b/c those are the same thoughts I have about Anthro aka, the cool girl. If I could have everything in that store I would…but alas, always goes back to $$! Ode to Anthro 🙂
Oh I am so in love with anthropologie too…The way they stage their store IS as much fun as the stuff itself! Their clothes are great too!
I always find something in their sale room. AND always seem to bring home more latte bowls and Volcano candles each time I go (which…thankfully is not often. Too far)
know what you mean about Anthro—I actually used to work there as a visual merchandiser–which is a lot of fun as all of the window items are essentially made by the visual department. And of course I couldnt resist the beautiful reproductions and the lovely clothes!
I had no idea about the Open House site, but my oh my! OK I want the bath, the master bedroom’s windows and drapes, and the kid’s room beds and banners hanging from the canopies. Amazing!
JUST this weekend my husband’s Facebook status read, “Joel is wondering when his wife will come out of Anthropologie” Thanks for legitimizing my love of Anthro 🙂
How did you know that was my favorite store, and apple is another shop I love. I also love books stores- Hermes, Tiffany and last but not least the Container store…

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
oh, I’m going to spend hours on the site now..I literally can just walk around the store forever!

Great post. Love Anthropologie. Love. Makes me weak in the knees.

use it only for inspiration …then find your own pieces and build from it. …because their stuff is shit and far too pricey for shit. lol.
I get that same feeling when I go to the Pottery Barn, Anthropologie is not up in Vancouver unfortunately.

I love your blog header and the new look of your blog!
Believe it or not, I have never purchased anything from Anthro, but I have admired their beds and mirrors. I think they have great designs.
