This weekend was a bit action packed and a bit relaxing. For months now I’m been toying with the idea of re-doing our kitchen floor.
Our floors in the kitchen are nothing to write home about. They were wood, but full of water stains, uneven color and yes when Bear was a puppy he decided to chew through the floor:
Here is the damage Bear did:
For months I went back and forth with what I wanted to do. I loved the idea of white penny tiles, but hated the amount of $$$ it would take to make that happen. Then I thought of painting them, but that seemed like a really long and hard home project and since it’s impossible to get oil based paint in NY I didn’t want to settle for another paint that would chip off easily.
A couple of weeks ago after hours of research and trips to home improvement stores I bit the bullet and got some paint!
Here is the before:
Check out where everything in the kitchen went:
Living Room:
Dining Room: You can even see a peek of our headboard thats to get upstairs and get covered along with the rest of the bed and our cabinet doors that come off in order to paint some trim. Pretty, right?
We started at around 10pm on Friday night and went to bed around 1 am. Then back up at 7 am and we worked did an additional coat before we left for the shore.
Here is a bit at the after:
Bear had to check it out and give his approval:
*Some of you may remember, but my kitchen walls actually use to be that color, which means a couple of weeks ago in preparation for the floor paint I had to repaint all of the walls in the kitchen!
DIY steps for painting a kitchen floor tomorrow. 🙂
WOW, I'm so excited for you. What a wonderful design choice. Also-looking forward to seeing your bed once it is finished. What kind of counter tops do you have? I see they're black, are they stone?
Due to green laws you can't buy oil-based paint in NY.
Oil-based paint is really the best choice though for painting something that is heavy traffic.
The kitchen was actually a complete gut job so everything is new in there. I wanted soapstone countertops, but we ran out of money. So we used laminate from IKEA for $130!! So an inexpensive fix that gives me the look I wanted while we save $$$ for the soapstone.
Fabulous!!! I can't believe you have taken on all these painting projects yourself. Way to go!! Those painted floors give the kitchen new life and remind me of Tory Burch's kitchen floors. Tres chic!!
I am breathless with that color!!! You are the second blogger who has painted their floors, so now I am getting inspired! I have to wait for my husband to go back out of town so I can do it. He get's nervous when I start projects :} It does look fabulous though…… Sherry
holy crap – it looks SOOOO good! i have been thinking about painting the parquet floor in my kitchen, and i think this might have convinced me to do it.
It looks so great. I love the turquoise color. I want to do this with my kitchen and entry floors so badly but I'm worried about the resale and what other buyers that don't "get" a painted floor will think. Good for you for painting it though.
Stepping into a project like this you should be rewarded. I can only imagine what you went through before you actually took the jump….and don't you just love when it turns out perfect!! Or even more perfect than you thought! BTW – I saw the paint on the "butt" pic….I would be green from head to toe!!

Hi Camila, I came to your blog through Johns Journal who's home you are featuring this week & I am so glad I did! What a fabulous blog! I am so impressed with your new kitchen floor! I just wanted to ask where you got your coffee table from? It is exactly what I have been looking for…and I am really hoping they ship to the UK!
Hi Camila! I found you through Design Sponge's article on your painted floors. I was actually wondering where you got your white Kitchen Island with the drop leaf? I've been looking for one similar to it. Any help would be great. Thanks!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
amazing!! loves it.
OMG! The floor! Fabulous!!!
So amazing! LOVE IT!!!!
What a great colour choice for the kitchen floor! I absolutely love it! So glad you decided to go for it!
Gorgeous – your cute knobs really pop now!
Why is it impossible to find oil paint in NY? Is there a law against it or something?
It looks gorgeous! What a bold move — it definitely paid off!

Awesome! Can't believe you can't buy oil-based paint! Maybe marine paint? It's incredibly heavy-duty, and NYC IS surrounded by water!

This is fantastic and you’ve just inspired me to paint our balcony floor, since our lil’ pup did some damage to it!
Lovely finding you!
