This past weekend we celebrated my SIL’s birthday! Happy Birthday Jenn! Jenn recently moved into the city and has a cute bedroom that was pretty much a blank slate. We decided it needed a little bit of color so part of the projects we tackled this weekend was her birthday gifts.
Like many newbie renters Jen’s bed was without a headboard of any sort. Since space is a luxury in NYC apartments I knew we needed something on the small size that didn’t take up a huge amount of space.
DIY instructions for the project are available here.
I went through my fabric stash and found some complementary fabric for a toss pillow:
Then I went through my furniture stash aka the garage and found a cute octagon shaped nightstand and gave it some new life with two shades of purple spraypaint:
{I need to take a picture of the inside as well. We decided to have a little fun and paint the inside the same light lilac that we used on the hardware. Love.}
Lastly we needed a little bit of artwork to finish this mini re-vamp and I knew just the person to make me something. Jon!
We didn’t go matchy/matchy with the artwork, but we did play with some brights colors that we knew would work with our fabric.
{Many have emailed me asking me about Jon’s artwork. Don’t fret we are setting up an etsy shop. We currently have 25 pieces in different colors/sizes waiting to be listed. Should be up next week.}
Jenn loved her gifts and we were able to let our creative juices flow and not break the bank. Sometimes you just need to think outside of the box. Hope I gave you some good gift ideas.
I will make sure to take some new pictures of everything in the daylight once they are in place.
*Big thanks to my FIL who snapped all of these pictures for me when this bad blogger forgot to take pictures during the reveal.
You are killing me with that headboard. That fabric is from JoAnn’s???! That’s an incredible find! Making an upholstered headboard is inching up my to do list… and this one is fabulous inspiration, Camila!
Wow – you definitely have a different JoAnn’s Fabrics then we do here – I could look all day and never find anything as wonderful as that. Or perhaps you have that ability to always find the needle in the haystack – either way – your SIL is one lucky girl!
You can easily find pieces at Home Depot, which there is now a location in the city. They have 2 x 4 pieces of yucca board or peg board in the lumbar section. Depending on the size of your bed you may need them to cut one of the boards down for you. They do rough cuts at Home Depot so just get them to do it.
I guess you could try hanging them with the 3M stripes, but I normally just use one small nail for each board and it normally doesn’t cause any problems for renters.
You are the best SIL ever!!! Amazing…love your colors and fabrics. Will she share the room with everything in place? And I think I missed the final reveal of your sister’s apartment you were doing awhile back?!?!?!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]

What a great project I love everything, the headboard and bolster fabrics are perfect!

So cute and colorful!
This looks awesome! I hope we get to see photos of the whole room… completed! 😀
Thank you for my beautiful gifts! I love them, I’ll send you a picture when everything is hung and it’s all put together. Love youu
I love the color on the nightstand! Looking forward to the etsy shop!
Camila,
LOVE the headboard that has been on my to-do list for a while!! Two questions though…
1. As someone living in NYC, where could I easily buy MDF?
2. How did you hang it up, esp in a renter’s apt?
Thanks 🙂

Hope that helps!
