I heard whispers of a Duralee factory outlet where yards of fabric could be purchased for as little as $3 a yard, but I had never actually tried to find out if such a place really existed. With a little one on the way and a new room that needs to be outfitted for him I knew I needed to check it out and see if this was a design myth or truth.
Now my journeys to for a bargain have taken me to many places. Some are treasure troves that become new permanent stops for me and other are disappointing and I make a note to never return. I wasn’t sure what the Duralee Factory Outlet was going to be, but I was excited to actually find out it did exist and was only about 30 mins away from me.
From the front door I could tell this was my sort of place:
Bolts upon bolts of fabric and all of them were calling my name. They had drapery lining fabric for $1.50 a yard, prints were $3.50 a yard and upholstery weight fabric came in at $6 a yard. Woo-hoo!
Here are some of my favorite finds:
{Yummy striped fabric. The multi shades of orange and pink will work nicely in my living room}
{Hello pattern. I’ve seen you both before and for way more than $3.5o a yard!}
{Gray mod fabric, that reminded me of my sweet friend,Marianne}
{This fabric was called Patricia and I fell in love at our first introduction. Jon made the mistake over the weekend of telling me that he doesn’t really care what I put in the house. Not in a bad way, but in an I trust you sort of way. That being said I purchased yards upon yards of it to make curtains for our upstairs hallway window. Love you honey.}
{Here I am pondering another floral fabric. Totally forgot about that one during check out. Now I’m itching to go back and pick some up! Excuse the messy hair. The one downside to the outlet was no AC. It was HUMID in there!}
{Heading to checkout. We had to make two trips with our carts to get everything we wanted.}
Totally in love with this place. I’m going to make it one of my weekly stops. If you are in the NY area and want to check it out for yourself you must let me know and we will go together!
Address: 1775 5th Ave Bayshore, NY 11706
Hours: Mon-Fri 9 am- 4 pm
Cash only! I picked up 22 yards of fabric for $55!
P.S. There was an older gentleman there when we were checking out who asked me a million and one questions about what I was buying. When I told him I was pregnant he was shocked. I guess my ruffled shirt hid my bump. Anyway he loved my mom and proceeded to talk with her about my sisters, the baby, etc. To be honest he was driving me a little nutty. On the way out though the gentleman that was ringing me up told me that the older gentleman was actually the founder of Duralee. Big whoops on my part. 🙂
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
LOVE this post! Did they have trims?
They did have trim. They were all a bit too formal for me, but they had some. Can’t remember the pricing on them.
Guurrrlll– score! I live 20 minutes from High Point and I thought we had good fabric outlets here, but that is so much better. I’ve gotten really hooked on Duralee lately.
Where are the fabric outlets near High Point? I’m about an hour from High Point.

They are a Long Island based company so I don’t think they do, but you can call up Duralee and ask.
Love Duralee, sooo jealous!
SCORE! i’ll have to see if i can find a way to finagle myself up there next time i’m in nyc…
and VERY cool that you met the founder–would make for a great interview!
Looks like heaven to me ! Come enter my Imperial Trellis pillow giveaway……
OK, I’m making mental notes of all the places that are close you so that when I come for the weekend we can spend all weekend shopping and of course toting around that sweet little man of yours (and no I dont mean Jon, but he can come too if he wants haha)
So excited for this BTW- lets make it happen!
Jon’s totally going to be bummed you didn’t mean him. You know he loves ya! We must make this happen!
Wow!! That is amazing,if I could sew it would be so wonderful to find a place like this!! You really found a treasure trove of goodness, Kathysue
Oh, just color me GREEN with envy….would love, and NEED a store like that right NOW!!! 😀
Suzanne
oh wow! I would totally die and go to fabric heaven if I had such a place near me!!
Camilla, I just found out we are guest posting on the same post today at Amandas blog. Love the gray you chose as your favorite gray. It is soft on the eye and yet it has a depth of color!! Loving her fav paint series. It was an honor to be in this line-up with you, Kathysue
I just made a to-do list Monday with my husband of things I want/need to do before our little boy makes his debut (Christmas Eve) or before I become to uncomfortable to enjoy myself. But……….this is now ON THE LIST! Thanks for sharing! (Have you seen the blog Lay Baby Lay? Great nursery ideas!) I’d love to know what your ‘must haves’ are for your nursery and other great shopping treasures around the city. I’ll shoot you a message when I’m going in case you need an excuse for a meetup with a blog fan : ) (Have you ever been to the sale at Brimfield, CT?)
I’ve never been to Brimfield. Would love to meet up if you come to NY. I’m due a couple of days before!
Oh, wow. What a fabric lover’s paradise! I am CRAZY in love with the orange, pink and red staggered stripe fabric that you found.
I know. It wasn’t even Duralee fabric. It must be from another company they own. It was stamped that it was from the UK. I wanted a whole bolt of it.
I am so jealous. I wish we had something like that near me! Lucky score for you though! Can’t wait to see all the goodies you make!
WOW!! That many yards of fabrics for only $55 bucks wow 🙂 What a great spot for fabric and so close to your home
Camila – is it on Long Island? I’m terrible with the geography over there, but we’ll be in LI for a wedding next May and I already told Ryan I might have to make a pit stop with a shipping box. 🙂 Also hope I can meet some of my fave NY bloggers then, so I’ll let you know dates when it gets closer!
It is on a Long Island. A little further out then where I am. Let me know when you are going to be around.
I’m Chartreuse Green with jealousy!
Oh what a great find, Camila! Is it open to the public or to the trade only? I get a little intimidated at places like that!
Thanks for all your great tips 🙂
It’s open to the public. 🙂
So jealous! Wish I lived nearby. Super cool.
I’m too excited and haven’t checked to see exactly where that is. is it close to Garden City?
Do you know if they take phone orders and ship? What a paradise!
I’m close to Garden City and it was about a 30 min drive for me. They don’t even have a phone there so I doubt they take phone orders.
Hello All – Just thought we’d chime in here to give you a bit more information. Our outlet is open to the public and it is located at the rear of the building at our corporate headquarters – 1775 Fifth Avenue, Bay Shore, NY (Long Island). We are open Monday-Friday 10am to 4pm and after Labor Day we will be open on Saturdays from 10-3. Hope to see you all there!
Where,is the outlet in North Carolina?
It’s on Long Island.
Hi,
I’m desperate to find any amount of Duralee shambord with yellow background. I’ve searched the Internet high and low. If you have any ideas at all, please please please help me. I’m in the middle of a project. I pay anything and would even piece memo samples together.
Thanks for any consideration you may give me. Thank you. Thank you
Hi Joanne,
I’m sorry, but I don’t work for Duralee. I’m just an interior designer that happens to have a Duralee outlet about 45 mins away from me.
Camila
You are so kind to share this information. Many will keep things like this to themselves. We luv U!!!!
WooHoo! I am so thrilled to know about this place. I’m in LI too and know how hard it is to come by good deals. Usually in blogland many of the great go-to places are in the South or in in NYC but this place is only about 20 min. from where I work! Actually Fabric Mill is just down the road from me but I feel their prices are a bit higher than online and fabric choices haven’t changed much over the years. So thank you for sharing 🙂
Wow! Thanks for sharing this info Camila. Bayshore is only about 3o minute from my mom’s house. I will defintiely be taking a trip to the outlet next weekend when I visit family. I had no idea this was there. Love that orange and pink stripe fabric!
I have wanted to go there FOREVER! I use to work for the Duralee showroom in Boston when I was in design school and would always hear about how awesome the warehouse was, just never made it down. Roadtrip next time I am at my parent’s house!
i don’t know why but i always imagined you lived in some far off place. SOOO excited to scroll down to the end of this post and realize the duralee place is actually around the corner from me (i am in setauket)! for some reason this makes me like your blog even more!! (i think i now can look to your sources as actual possibilities!) Love your work and excited to have a fellow long islander here!
-christine
Totally in love with this place. I’m going to make it one of my weekly stops. If you are in the NY area and want to check it out for yourself you must let me know and we will go together!
Well, I live in Bayshore and can not drive. I am taking you up on this offer!!
I would love to go with you. Want to make pillow shams for my new comforter.
I am taking you up on your offer. Hope to see ya soon!!! I’m not joking!!!
Best Regards, Laura
I went on their website and it says they only sell to the “trade”. Can anyone shop hrere or do you have to be an interior designer?
Anyone can shop at the outlets.
i was there Thurs. Still hot!
I have been going there for years, love the place.
I am in Southampton, so it is a ride, but usually well worth it.
I make a lot of tablecloths and had my furn reupholstered with their fabric.
I have to browse your blog to see the drapes you made!
So glad I found this post! I am headed here next week, and I can’t wait. Can’t believe I didn’t know about this place before. It’s near Island Thrift which is a *great* thrift store.
I need two yards of Duralee #32033 -122 to finish a project. It’s a discontinued fabric…you can see it on the Duralee website, it’s stamped discontinued. I was paying $100.00 to buy 2 yards before being informed that it was unavailable. Will pay that price to anyone who can find it. Would appreciate help.:)
Just wondering if the outlet is still there and if the prices are still the same since this was posted in 2011. I would appreciate hearing from you before I make the 3 1/2 hour trip.
Thank you…
Outlet is there, plan for it to close at 3PM. Lots of contract fabrics (think hotel style) and fabric with flaws, but still very good selection of nice fabric at great prices. Silks & velvets $8/yd are limited but amazing value, huge selection of upholstery fabric $6.50/yd and then lower pricing for sheers and other fabric.
I wouldn’t drive 3 hrs- too hit or miss and there was little of today’s hot design styles. That being said, there was yardage on many of the bolts which is unusual to find and 20+ yards is common. Styles were traditional with better than average selection of solid colors. If you are in the area, it is wonderful resource and the people were exceedingly nice and helpful. Since I have previously shopped at the now closed Brunschwig warehouse, I was sorry not to find any high end fabric on my trip and am still looking for a replacement source. Oswald’s in W. Springfield MA had higher end, but limited choice despite a huge warehouse. Pricing hovered around $20/yd and the silk velvet I loved was at $100/yd. I did see a Brunschwig that I recognized from the 90’s with its blue plaid and embroidered sunflowers and there was Ralph Lauren fabric mixed in all the tapestry fabrics.
If you are in NY, combine your trip to Duralee with a different retail store in Plainview, which has large selection of current fabrics from multiple houses. Not super high-end, but a good selection with retail pricing.
Do you know if they are open on Saturdays?
They actually shut down in June. So sadly there is no more Duralee Outlet.
So now that they are closed where do you go?
I don’t have a new go to place anymore. I just order my fabric online and occasionally end up Fabric Mill which is also on long island. Hope that helps!
