Now that our shower has come and gone I’m starting to get into full on nesting mode. For the last couple of weeks a design plan has started to come together, but I have yet to pull the trigger on anything and I’m starting to freak out that we only have a little over 90 days until the newest family member arrives.
I figured I should start with the inspiration behind the look of the nursery. Small back story: My mom has many talents, but doing DIY projects/Arts and Crafts has never been her thing. While she was pregnant with me though she ventured out of her comfort zone and made a needlepoint baby bag. All these years later (Ah! 30) the needlepoint bag is still around and a couple of months ago I found it.
Isn’t it sweet looking? It pulled at my heart strings that my mom had made it for me and immediately wanted it somewhere in the nursery. Little did I know that it would quickly become the inspiration for the space.
I was still a little on the fence about all of the colors in needlepoint working in a room until I saw everything come together when I saw this color story in Hampton Designer Showhouse:
Isn’t it stunning. I love the unexpected color combo of emerald green, melon and lemon. Beautiful. Seeing it made me realize that all of the colors in my needlepoint really would work together in a room. All that was missing from the room was the pop of blue that my needlepoint has.
I then started going through my fabric swatches and played around with some combo’s and came up with a favorite:
I finally get to use one of my favorite fabrics:
{Arbre Chinois in Meadow by Schumacher}
It took Jon a little while to warm up to the fabric, but eventually he agreed that it would work and it will be used in small doses. With having a boy I know my future holds lots of boy related activities/colors/themes so I figured this nursery was my only chance to make his space not scream boy, but happy baby.
I can’t wait to get started on it and share the process with all of you. Are you loving the direction I’m going in? Please say yes or else this hormonal preggo lady will start to tear up. JK….kinda.
I love spaces that are inspired by items with a family history. It looks like this space will definitely be outside of the traditional blue boy nursery that we all see, and I can’t wait for you to share the progress!
part of what is so wonderful about planning for a baby in your family is that you get to do what you like not what is expected of you! the family piece from your mom is so sweet and a great jumping off point. The colors are happy and fresh and very you. I giggled at your last comment. When I was eight months pregnant with my last child (and the only one I knew the gender of) I wanted a certain quilt. I asked family for gift cards to a store that carried it for Christmas and went ahead and painted the room colors to coordinate. Well, I went to order it and was told it was not available anymore. The customer service rep asked what it was for and suggested some totally baby quilt that would NOT do at all. I wanted a boy look but not screaming boy. The lady was insistent that my husband suggest that to me and finally said to her, ” well, you suggest that to an 8 1/2 month hormonal pregnant lady and I’ll just sit here and listen to her response.” We went with something similar to what I originally wanted. You know what you like…go for it!!!! Happy Times : )
It’s super cute. And I’m right there with you. I have a good majority of baby boy’s nursery figured out but haven’t yet pulled the trigger on ordering. What’s our problem?? HA! We both need to just buck up and do it b/c if you’re anything like me your nesting instinct has kicked in major and you’re ready to see that room come together and get the little baby wipes and everything else necessary in there!
Lovely start to the room. I like the original colour combo and your source of inspiration. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I laughed out loud at this comment…

A little over 90 days? You hope you do – bub will decide when to enter the world. First rule about babies, they are in charge!
Enjoy your last 90 or so days of quiet time, and prepare yourself for the most wonderful moments of your life – they are about to come and smack you right between the eyes.

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
