Weekend Recap: My own little bit of Chiang Mai Dragon
I think most interior design bloggers have a soft spot in their heart for Chiang Mai Dragon by Schumacher.
While my husband hates the actual dragon head even he can agree that it has a great color story and I while back I was able to purchase some for a song on ebay.
Originally I was going to use it in my bedroom and they became euro shams, but then I went in a different direction and no longer needed it so it just hung out in my fabric closet until a couple of weeks ago.
I found these caned beauties at a local thrift shop and decided to use them in my living room. Of course they needed some tweaking, but they had good bones. Immediately I thought of my Chiang Mai Dragon shams and I knew the euro shams would cover the seat.
They got a coat of hi-gloss black paint:
Now I wish I had an amazing tutorial to go with this post, but I just winged it and literally draped fabric over the seat cushion after removing the original fabric and tacked away. I then used a razor blade to cut off the excess fabric and hide the tacks with ribbon.
*We tried using staples at first, but they weren’t going in properly. So instead of wasting more time we just whipped out the air compressor and used brad nails instead.
{I’m certain all professional upholsters are dreading my technique, but it worked well and quickly and over all I’m really happy with the results, because sending them to my upholster was not in the budget.}
All finished:
The striped pillows are going to be moving onto my sofa, but they just arrived as well so I needed to share and show them off as well. 🙂
Did you get any DIY projects finished? Only one more project left in the living room and then it’s finally finished ! (For now. 🙂 )
Oh, this is fabulous!! I’ve just been contemplating using a bit of the wallpaper in aquamarine, though it could require taking out a loan! 🙂 Yes, most designers love this print, such a fabulous classic! Lucky you to have found a bit of it ebay! Janell
Oh, I do have a soft spot in my heart for Chiang Mai Dragon! I love that you found a way to incorporate it into your space. Your chairs look fantastic, especially for “winging it”!
Oh my goodness! Love the fabric choice and love how the project turned out. I have two cane backs myself that need to be reupholstered, but I just lost my sewing machine and my budget isn’t allowing a reupholster job either. I don’t know what to do, but yours turned out beautiful!
I love the Chiang Mai with your rug! The color combo is great. I always keep an eye out on Craigslist for cane back chairs because they are an easy addition to any room and a quick DIY project. Adding yours to my cane back inspiration folder.
I LOVE them. I got two tufted cane chairs for $40 and I painted them a high gloss creamy white but they really could use a new upholstery job. The tufted back I think is a little above me though and my husband got a little sticker shock when I told the price for them to be re-upholstered so I think they are going to stay their chartreuse velvet for a little while. I too love the Chiang Mai and had three pillows made for me in the aquamarine for my living room. Do you know the name of that Duralee fabric? I love it and it would go perfect with my pillows (they are the same fabric as your ottoman in the background). I love it! Great job!
My favourite fabric! Your chairs look fantastic! I scored some Chiang Mai memos and made pillows with them! They make my heart sing every time I see them!
i am obsessing over the rubie green pineapple fabric to cover a beautiful wing chair…bw fabric and upholstery, it’s going to b $900!!!! I saw your slipcovered wing chair…help! Where do I begin!!!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
I love love love it! Absolutely gorge, I wish I had your DIY knack. Great stuff x

Love the new cushions. Are they custom?
They are custom. I snagged some fabric at Duralee and had them made into pillows with a contrasting welt.
I could not love this fabric more and the chairs look fantastic! I just did my own little Chiang Mai home project in aquamarine…

Camilla, I LOVE that fabric AND the chairs! You are so brave diving into jobs like that – you give me courage to try it myself! Gorgeous.

Your space is looking so jubilant! Can’t wait to see all these pieces together. Just the snippet of rug, ottoman and chair is divine.
