I’m wiped from this weekend. We had a client install in the city on Saturday, then stopped in Brooklyn to drop off a custom piece of artwork. It was a massive piece at 30 x 40 and of course I fell in love with it and was sad to see it part. On the way home we managed a stop at my favorite thrift shop to see if they had anything that would work in our nursery.
Our nursery is on the teeny side so it’s been hard sourcing current items for the space. Everything is just too large. Vintage is really the way to go for us and while walking the aisles I found this:
{ When searching for a small piece don’t get stuck on descriptions. This piece is actually a server, but it is full of great storage so it fit the bill. Missing handle was actually in the top drawer. Sorry for the less than stellar image it’s from my iphone. Can’t wait to upgrade it!}
Whenever I’m at a thrift store I always check pieces for manufacturer’s name, because you just never know what kind of a deal you are going to find. In looking around I found out that the piece was by John Stuart. Of course I google search kept sending me to Jon Stewart sites, but after a little searching I found out the John Stuart company was started in 1934 and became one of the premier showrooms in NYC for modern furniture pieces.
John Stuart pieces are sought out in the antique world and there are currently over 40 pieces for sale on 1st dibs website.
This piece reminded me of the thrift store find I had my eye on:
All of the pieces fall in the $1,500-$3,400 range. My thrift store find was only $178! I did a quick check on the nursery floor plan I walk around with and saw that it would work and headed straight to the register, before an antique dealer beat me to it. Without even having to haggle on the piece the cashier dropped the price to $158! Win, win.
Fantastic find!! I can’t wait to see the nursery. I’m sure it’ll be fabulous. I think my best find so far was actually fashion related – black patent pump never worn Louboutins for $75
What a great find! My best find was a pair of Dorothy Draper Espana dressers on Craigslist for $70 each. They belonged to the seller’s mother since the 40s and they were in such great shape, just faded.
Great score, I’m so jealous! So far my best is a $2 piece of blue quartz, that my daughters teacher just informed me is extremely rare & valuable. Now if I could just find someone to appraise it, I’m dying to know how valuable it really is!
What a terrific find! The magic of a smartphone is you can do all of that research while standing over your treasure at the thrift store. Thanks for sharing.
I love a great find! I happen to be lucky while thrifting! I am curious the name and location of the store in Brooklyn. My son and his girlfriend live there and are looking fir fun & inexpensive ways to decorat their apartment. Thanks!!
I’d also love to hear a list of your go-to thrift resources!!! I live in the NYC area and I think in metro areas like New York the thrifting marketplace is very different and oversubscribed and highly competitive than in other places! I currently need to furnish a whole house on the cheap, and am always keen to hear where others have had good luck finding treasures!
LOVE the server, love it more because you’re not actually using it as a server. May I ask what thrift store(s) on LI you shop at? I once found a fabulous art deco wardrobe at the St. Vincents on Jericho Tpke. I could spend hours in there!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]

Hi Bonnie,
I’m sorry, but the store wasn’t in Brooklyn. It was a just a stop I made on my home from Brooklyn. It’s actually on Long Island.
