Today’s IN HER SHOES is a great one. I’ve always dreamed of seeing my name on the masthead of a shelter magazine, which means I pretty much want to swap careers with today’s featured lady.Today I’m featuring a day in the life of Frances Bailey the Style Director of HGTV Magazine.
————————
Here’s a day in my life. I do really love what I do. I’m sooo proud of HGTV Mag and what we’re creating. Thrilled to share the chaos that I call my life….
7:00 AM
Wake up to crickets sounding out of my iphone.
Put on the kettle to make coffee. Every morning I sip from the cup I got at our office Christmas Exchange. My fun colleague, Jennifer Berno, made me a cup with hottie, Ryan Gosling. Who doesn’t want to start their day with him??
7:30 AM
Check emails; watch my new obsession, Charlie Rose, on the new CBS Morning Show then dress. After looking at my day’s calendar I realize that I need more caffeine and head over to get fully fueled at Joe’s Coffee off University Place. Not only does their coffee rock but they do fun designs on top. It’s like Design Star for baristas! I also love Joe’s because they sell Amy Sedaris’s cupcakes which she makes when she’s in the mood. They are de-lish and she’s from my hometown, Raleigh, NC as if I needed another reason to love her. Being in Joe’s and thinking about Amy makes me realize that I haven’t signed up yet for AmyandTedsupperclub.com. This is an underground Brooklyn supper club that is SO MUCH FUN and named for Amy Sedaris and Ted Allen. Gotta sign up for the next supper club as they fill up quickly. It’s no. 28 thing to do today.
9:05 AM
Jump on subway at Union Square Stop to admire the dueling musicians on the platform.
Head to the flower district to snap pictures of flowers for a meeting later on that day. The market is one of NYC’s secrets… and I love the gang down there. Sigh. Spring is comin’!!! Stop to debate buying some paper whites for my apt. Force myself to stay focused on task. Must find summer-y flowering bushes for a shoot next week. On the hunt…
11:30AM
Jumped back on subway and headed to the office. Excited to see the Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, West Elm Public Relations crew that’s come in to show the Style Dept their latest and greatest for Summer 2012. As usual, they don’t disappoint.
NOON
Drool heavily over all their fun brand new loot and get caught up on all the fun stuff they have going on then fly downtown to meet up with the fabulous Courtney Novogratz. Am there to scout their NYC home which is A-mazing. Having house envy… They found out I was from NC and told me they met at a party there. Love the love. No big surprise here but Robert and Courtney ooze style and Could Not Be Nicer.
Here’s Team Courtney hard at work in their too cool to be true house. Can I move in?
1:30-4pm
Hustle back up town for meeting/brainstorm/checking emails session. Have an art meeting to flesh out a story for a shoot next week. Calls/emails/meetings then more calls/emails/meetings/chatter. Take a pinterest break but I have to put a timer on it as it’s my wormhole. Find some visual inspiration there then back to the emails. Set plans for upcoming Chicago trip and send out emails to friends there. So many cool homes to scout, shops to see and don’t even get me started on the foodie scene…
4:30 PM
Prep for cover meeting with uber talented stylist, Scott Horne. He’s slightly tortured to pose for me but I insist.
6:20 PM
Back to desk. In fabric heaven… Shoot is for our June/July Cover. I want to bring in Hawaiian Tropic and Margaritas to set the mood. Love summer shoots…
Grab a chat with the crew/check a few fav blogs then review pictures taken at the NY Gift show this weekend. LOVED Tina Frey’s outfit (isn’t she adorable) and love how she goes with her chic chandeliers.
7:42
Head out the door to join friends in town for the gift show at watering hole in the East Village. Laugh, dish and compare notes on life.
10:05
Walk home and check emails while watching The Philadelphia Story on TCM. Love Katherine Hepburn. Checked out the skinny on Quest Love at Bam in April. Must Buy Tickets.
12 AM
Lights out!

A big thanks to Frances for sharing her day with us. I can’t wait to get my hands on the latest issue of HGTV magazine.
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
Love Frances! We used to work together at Country Living!
Thanks for that snapshot! Fun to get a little glimpse. 🙂 (Also, I think the new HGTV Magazine is so well done! Don’t tell House Beautiful, but I think I get *more* excited now when HGTV arrives.)
Love it – I wonder if we can swap for a day! =_
Love Frances, she’s a North Carolina girl like me too! Charlie Rose not so much, but I really liked his mother.
I love the magazine. So excited to see the next issue. I would love to walk in your shoes for a day. How exciting! Great job and thanks for your hard work to keep me and others so inspired.
What a great In Her Shoes! I used to work at a magazine and miss the hustle and bustle of running around NYC…what a fun (but exhausting) day! Thanks for sharing!
Sitting in my mis-matched house in Raleigh, dreaming of visiting Frances Bailey in New York. Meanwhile, her namesake, two year old France’s Fischer is roaming the house unsupervised in osh kosh train conductor overalls and yellow rain boots. Frances B. would certainly approve of little Frannie’s self styling today. Thanks for this look at your day!
