This weeks Treat yo self item is something I was a bit unsure of at first, but in the end I actually ended up loving it and needed to share.
One of the nice perks of writing this blog is that from time to time I have publishing houses contact me and offer to send me new design books to check out. I had heard of Heirloom Modern before and knew that it was written by the bloggers behind Hollister Hovey. Hollister Hovey is written by two sisters, Hollister and Porter and they started blogging around the same time as me when they were a lot less blogs out there and we all sort of “knew” each other. They are big into using taxidermy in their decor and that simply wasn’t and still isn’t my cup of tea so when I was offered a copy to review I wasn’t sure what to say. In the end the beautiful cover art had me at hello and the book arrived last week.
{Heirloom Modern will be released on April 2}
I had some time to dig into the book and let me tell you I loved it and want to be friends with Hollister and Porter. Normally I just flip through design books and ahh and ohh over the pretty pictures, but this time I actually read the copy and fell in love the Hovey family. The sisters talk a lot about their parents and what heirloom modern means to them. It’s so nice to read about their mother and how stylish and fabulous she was and all of the ways she gave them their sense of style. They talk about all of their favorite items that have been passed down from their mom and when I read that she died in 2002 I must admit I teared up. You totally become attached with the Hovey family and it all due to the stories that belong to many of the pieces they use in their decor.
{The framed Hermes scarf above the fireplace was actually their mother’s and she purchased it in Paris on her honeymoon.}
{The leather topped desk beloved to their father and he got it from his step-father. His mother had it restored and it was a wedding gift for their parents. So much better than something off of a registry. }
{Their father loved toy soldiers and now whenever they stumble upon vintage toy soldiers they pick up one-off pieces and group them all together.}
I fell in love with the wonderful mix they have in their apartment. Everything was either something passed down from someone they loved or a piece that gave them a memory about someone they loved. How amazing is that?
I would love for years from now for Hudson to see an elephant figurine and think of me and pick it up for his own home because it makes him think of mom. I try not to be a pack rat and get rid of “things” and simply hold on to memories, but I’m going to try and be better and hold on to certain items so that my child and future children will have things that add love to their spaces.
I think this is why I love vintage finds and have vintage pieces sprinkled throughout my home. I may not have know the owners of my items, but I like knowing that these pieces had a history and were loved and now they will give me new memories.
Along with the Hovey sisters apartment there are 13 other homes where you get to see some beautiful spreads and get inspired by the families that are behind all of the treasures.
Are you itching to get your hands on Heirloom Modern?Any other design books I need to get my hands on?
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
Sounds like a great read. Thanks for the intro.
We’re so happy that you enjoyed the book! We’re so thankful not only to share the story of our family but also all the other wonderful stories of family and friends!!
You’re so right – the cover is gorgeous! I might need a copy after reading your thoughts on the book. I really do love it when homes are decorated with pieces that have such a special meaning. I always think of you whenever I see anything with elephants – so surely your little man will too. 😉 My kids are always pointing out horse stuff to me – makes my heart happy that they know what I love.
Really beautiful but I am hoping those tusks on the mantel are not real.
What beautiful photos! I am such a fan of decorating with pieces that truly have a story and mean something! Makes me feel guilty for all my Target purchases! Thanks for the book recommendation!
Have you read The Things That Matter by Nate Berkus? I reviewed it on my blog last week (I got to meet him last year in New York), and it reminds me of what you’re talking about here. He features friends with great, meaningful spaces and highlights their stories. It was so great and touching. If you liked this one, I think you’d love it.
