In NYC apartment rentals typically come in one of two sizes, tiny or teeny tiny. When it comes to actually buying an apartment you are pretty much stuck in the teeny tiny zone, but since you are in NYC all of your friends and family are insanely jealous of your teeny tiny space so it’s all good.
My sister’s boyfriend just bought a studio apartment in Manhattan and I’ve been enlisted for my decorating services. Now having a client that is a good friend and dates my sister has it’s up’s and down’s. On the up side I get to help furnish a space that my sister will eventually be moving into which is nice. I tend to decorate a bit more on the feminine side so it’s nice to flex my design muscles with a more gender neutral design. On the down side since it’s not the typical client/designer relationship there are times when we are both stubborn and my strong willed client won’t give in to my design vision. Normally all of my design clients are more than happy to take on all of my design advice and there are very few changes. We shall see how this whole design process goes. It will be interesting to see what we end up.
Here is a peek into the process thus far…
Before:
{This is the living, dining and sleeping area aka everything. There is also a walk in closet and bathroom off of the front door.}
{The kitchen opens up to the main room and doesn’t have a lot going on. It wasn’t even large enough for a full sized refrigerator.}
One of the first decisions that had to occur in the space was the new floor stain, paint for the walls and the kitchen.
Dark floors were the number request by my closet so the floors went from honey oak:
Since the floors went dark and the space is about 400 sq ft the question of going dark on the paint was discussed numerous times. I loved the idea, but didn’t want to push too much, because dark would make it feel a bit smaller, but I thought it would add more charm so I pushed for Holiday Wreath by Benjamin Moore. Numerous samples went up and in the end Holiday Wreath won! Yay!
Take a peek:
I love it and so does my client!
Once the floors and paint choices were made the kitchen was next. There wasn’t a big area to work with in the kitchen. The previous owner was only able to have a college sized refrigerator and my client wanted a full size one. The contractor was able to move a wall and take space from the walk in closet in order to put a full size refrigerator in.
{ During a trip to IKEA I fell in love with their new kitchen model, Sofielund. It had this great gray/taupe white wash look to it and I quickly became obsessed with it. Having it on both the upper and bottom cabinets felt a bit too modern, which is why we went with white instead.}
Stay tuned for more progress pictures..Now that the basics are done we get to start the fun part and pick out furniture, rugs, accessories, etc.
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
This looks amazing!! What a transformation!
It’s already off to such a great start!! LOVE the wall color with dark floor stain – so glad you went dark. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together – what a fun project!
It already looks so much better! But seriously, I don’t see how someone can live in such a small space. I’d go stir crazy! I guess if you’re young and in NYC you’re rarely home anyway…
Oh, I like where this is heading! I can’t wait to see more!
This looks incredible. I love love love your choices. I can’t WAIT to have you help me with a room after I move.!
Wow!! Everything looks good, I love the floors they turned out great, we recently hard new unfinished hardwood floors installed and went back in forth between Dark Walnut & Jacobean and in the end went with Jocabean so its cool to see how the dark walnut looks.
I also love what you did with the kitchen, including the recessed lighting and taking excising space from the closet…worked perfectly! Can’t wait to see more! 🙂
Looks great! It’s amazing how much better the place looks already. I look forward to seeing more!
Camila this looks great – you’ve really done a fantastic job! Can’t wait to see the rest.
