The best part about the warmer weather is getting an extra room in your house! I love getting to use a deck or a patio for relaxing, playing and eating! Currently we are crashing at my parents house while we will house hunt. Fingers crossed I have something to share on that front very soon! Back at our old house we had a large open deck that we used all of the time. It was one of our favorite spots! Before we moved we zhushed it up a bit more! You can check that here. At my parents house they a much smaller backyard with a raised brick and concrete patio/porch. There has always been a dining table and dining chairs out there, but this year we decided to give it a bit of a makeover with my sister’s, Jon and brother-in-law, Steve for Mother’s and Father’s day.
Are you ready to check it out?
Swapping out the old mat was an easy way to add a pop of color and play on the summer theme! Hudson picked out this lemon slice doormat at Michaels.
We have had a sofa out there for the past couple of years. It was a previous Mother’s day gift! I always swap out pillows that come with a sofa. We picked out a tropical palm leaf, a pink and orange tribal pillow,multi-color floral pillow and striped pillow.
The brick area above the sofa always bothered me. I enjoy the look of brick, but I just felt like it was missing something. I looked into a bunch of different options and finally went with my gut and used a piece of oversized art above it. It’s sealed and under an awning so I’m hoping it would be hit by rain or faded by the sun. So far it’s been doing good.
My parents dog decided she likes to lay on the sofa and leave little paw prints and hair all over the sofa! So, I wrapped a vintage kantha blanket around the bottom cushions to protect it. It has texture and makes it much easier to wipe the dog hair of it plus it adds a little bit of interest to the sofa.
This year along with adding the artwork above the seating area we swapped out the dining area. We use to have a round table here and it took up a lot of space. With this rectangular table we still have the same amount of seating, but we now have more room behind the chairs.
We mixed up the chairs and went with host chairs and then shaker style chairs with outdoor yellow seat cushions.
We also picked up a new outdoor striped rug that can be hosed down when it needs to be cleaned!
Since it’s a raised patio you can look into your neighbors backyard. The house behind us had been empty for the past year so it wasn’t really an issue, but now there are people and they took down the fence that use to be there. So, I ordered outdoor palm leaf curtains to give us a little more privacy.
We haven’t really used them closed. The neighbors ended up getting a new fence so now everyone has a bit more privacy, but it is a good photo backdrop!
It’s been so nice to enjoy the space and eat some meals outdoors. I finally got to use some serapa placemats I picked up while thrifting. Then I added some gingham plates I picked from Big Lots along with some pretty new blue glasses!
The latest addition to the outdoor space is the tabletop fire pit. The one I bought is currently out of stock, but the smaller size is currently available. It’s been nice to sit by a fire at night. Asher calls it his peaceful relaxing place.
I call it my place to eat s’mores!
Seriously is there anything better than a s’mores! I never realized how much I loved them until Jon mentioned it after he bought me a s’mores caddy, which I thought was such a random gift. Not random at all the man just knows me better than I know myself.
Are you a burnt marshmallow sort of person? I totally am and this one was delicious!
I keep sending my sisters pictures of the space to lure them to Long Island for a weekend visit!
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
