I have had so many people ask me for house updates on Instagram that I thought an update was in order. By this time I was hoping to be sharing photos of the house with new walls and getting ready for new flooring, but let’s just say we are feeling like Tom Hanks and Shelly Long from The Money Pit. We know it will all be worth it in the long run, but once the walls came down we kept findingissues that pushed our timeline and ate into the budget. Then the pandemic hit and things really went on pause. Construction is considered an essential business and we were able to get our new central air unit installed which is great. Jon has also continued to move things along and added a floor in the attic, demo’d the main bathroom and reframed it and framed the wall where the bay window is going. We were originally told the bay window install could happen during quarantine but things changed. So now we are back on pause, because they won’t install until NY state is off pause. We totally understand this, because a bay window isn’t anything critical. We are going to see if insulation can happen while we wait because that should only be one person in the house. We will know more this week. So that is where we were are. Lots of progress has been done, but everything still looks crazy. I have never been more excited to see walls.
Our new pride and joy! The new air handler and new flooring in the attic. The house had a central air until put in 2011 and we were excited to see that the ducting was all done even though the unit wasn’t turning on. We hoped it would be an easy fix. It wasn’t. The ducting was all done improperly so, we needed to do all new ducting and get a new unit. Cha-ching, but totally worth it.
We don’t have an existing bay window in the dining room so, in order to save some money Jon tackled framed the wall for the bay window. Doing this knocked 1,000 off the quote we got. It’s always good to ask if you tackle stuff yourself to get your estimate down. It took him a couple of hours and was totally worth it.
Our main bathroom isn’t massive. So, we are trying to make ever square inch Jon. Had to re-do some piping in here to move the toilet to another wall, which will let us put in a bigger vanity. In order to do that move we also have to move the door. Fun! Jon has been working on this space throughout quarantine because he can do it by himself in the house.

Here we are now:
So, that is where it stands. We wish we had walls back up already, but no one was expecting a pandemic and we are just rolling with it. We are just very grateful that our family is healthy, everyone still has their jobs, the boys are doing great at homeschooling. All is well.
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
