In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead of an unfinished cave filled with storage. The nice thing about it being unfinished was that we got to design it to fit our needs. We do a lot of projects so a shop area where my husband could put all of his tools was key. We also don’t have a TV in our living room so, we needed a family room with a big sofa, TV, video games, etc. We also needed toy storage and a desk area for the kids to do schoolwork. Oh yeah, we also need somewhere to do laundry! That is quite a big ask for a basement but we did it!
I would have loved to have an actual laundry room with a door, but we didn’t have the space to make that happen, so I came up with an alternative solution. We took an empty wall/hallway that leads to the family room area and we made a laundry nook that is flanked by closets! In doing this I got a little pushed-in area for the washing machine and dryer and I was also to get closet storage for linens, cleaning products, and kids’ craft supplies.
Here is a before photo of what we were working with:
Now that the framework was set we needed to finalize details like a washing machine and dryer. I was lucky enough to partner up with P.C. Richard & Son again and for the perfect washer and dryer. The best part about P.C. Richard & Son” target=”_blank”>P.C. Richard & Son is that it truly is a one-stop shop when it comes to outfitting your home. We were literally able to move from department to department to get everything that we needed. We were able to easily pick out all of our kitchen appliances and then moved floors to find the perfect mattress lastly, we found the perfect washer and dryer.
Our beautiful washer and dryer arrived! Want to know what we picked?
We had LG machines in our last home and I really enjoyed them. So, ideally, I was hoping to stick with an LG washer and dryer that had a large capacity and some sort of smart component to it. I found the perfect washer and dryer that we have happily been enjoying since we moved into the house.
Here are the features of the LG washer that I’m obsessed with:
-It’s a top loader. I don’t enjoy front loaders because they really hurt my back.
-The capacity is huge! It holds 5.5 cu. ft. and I can easily wash all of my King size bed items.
-It has Cold Wash technology which means I can wash everything in cold water which is better for the environment.
-It was Smart Pairing and ThinQ technology means that I get a notice when my wash cycle is done and it can pair with the dryer to have it set for the same sort of fabrics as the wash.
For the dryer, I went with the coordinating one so that the Smart technology would work seamlessly.
Here are the features of the dryer that I’m obsessed with.
-It is a front loader, but it has this LG Easy Load door which is heavenly! You can open the door the traditional way, but you can also open it from the side which makes it amazing for unloading. Every dryer should have this. I’m obsessed with it. Once you try it, you won’t be able to go back to a standard door.
-The dryer capacity is 7.3 cu. ft. and dries all of our bedding and towels with ease.
-It has this cool built-in sensor that adjusts the dryer time based on the moisture levels.
-With the Smart Pairing and ThinQ technology I get alerts when cycles finish and you can remote start loads.
-It has FlowSense technology which alerts me when I need to clean the lint filter.
-It is super quiet!!! I can watch a movie in the family room and not hear it at all.
Now with that in place we needed to make the space even prettier!
I used one of my favorite wallpapers to make this nook look special. It’s the to the trade, but happy to order it for you if you are interested in it. For the shelving above I wanted to use lucite because it would give me an area for me to put laundry supplies but also not detract from the wallpaper. I also used it in our old house in the boys room. It’s nice to be able to reuse items in the new house. See, if you buy what you love you will be able to love them for a long time!
I wanted to keep everything clean and pretty since it was going to be out in the open. This nook is literally right after you come down the stairs and in the hallway that leads to the family room.
Amazon to the rescue with all of these pretty laundry organizational items:
No.1: Laundry Room Labels: Perfect for putting everything in clear containers and then adding labels.
No.2: Sheep Wool Dryer Balls: Help shorten dryer time and soften fabric.
No.3: Chic Mini Trash Bin: Perfect for lint
No.4: Dryer Sheet Holder: Perfect size for dryer sheets! I ordered others that said they were for dryer sheets but they were way too big. I didn’t use the decal they provided. I used the one from the label set.
No.5: Retractable Clothes Line: So many of my clothes are line dry so this little item is perfect for that.
No.6: Glass Jar with lid: Great for housing the wool dryer balls. It would also be good for laundry pods or stain remover items.
No.7: Laundry scent bead container: Really cool for storage and comes with a cup.
No.8: Liquid Laundry Dispenser: I used one for detergent and one for fabric softener. I didn’t use the labels that came with it. I used the labels from the set.
No.9: ZUM laundry detergentI love the scent of this laundry detergent. It’s a bit of a hippie smell, but I like it in the dose it leaves on your laundry plus it’s totally clean.
Doing laundry has become a delight with all of these additions!
Ok, so who is coming over to do their laundry with me?
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.

What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
As always, this space is stunning! I love your use of pattern and color. I fully believe our utilitarian spaces deserve to be special as well.
That’s beautiful! Just getting ready to wallpaper my laundry room, as well, with the navy colorway. How many rolls did you use in that space?
