Show & Tell: Statement Headboard
Visions of this headboard have been dancing around my head for months now.
It belongs to Michelle Adams of Rubie Green and LONNY.
It started out as a prop for a Rubie Green ad:
Then it went home with Michelle:
Then Michelle moved and it went with her:
It’s glamorous and stylish shape will make this headboard a classic piece that can fit into many design styles.
I toyed with the idea of a similar headboard when we made our bed, but in the end I didn’t want to bug Jon with the shape so I’m still without it.
I do get to live vicariously through Kristen of This Charming House.
She recently tackled the project herself and provided amazing instructions for how you can get the look yourself.

ON THE BLOG
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.

I knew I recognized that first headboard! So elegant. I’d love to try making it myself, but chances are that it’ll turned out a mangled mess.

I’ve been toying with the idea of making an upholstered headboard for ages. I have some really great fabric that was left over from a client project that would be perfect. You used egg crates/mattress pads to create the foam layer, right? I have a feeling it will be one of those things that I do and say, “I should have done this a lot sooner.”
I was toying with the idea for a while too and definitely had that “I shoulda tackled this earlier” moment after!
I’ve read that you can use egg crates as foam to keep the cost down. I just called around local fabric stores asking for recommendations for places that distribute foam (that can cut it down based on your template). If you are doing a complicated shape like I did, even though its a bit pricier, it might be worth it. But if you are doing a simple shape, I say save that mulah and get some egg crates! 🙂
Ok. Now I want one! Only thing is, in NYC, it is so SO hard to find someone to do a major custom-cut like that. (That is why I have been thinking about buying my own jigsaw… I could use that in 650 sq. ft., right??) Also, see that little vase of flowers on her bedside table? I just replicated that Kate Spade bowl. It was super easy and I’m really in love with it. I posted it today if you’d like to see! Cheers!
I cut it out myself! SO much easier that you would think and a Jigsaw is only about $90! I did mine in my tiny dining room, so I’m sure you could do it in your apartment! If you don’t have experience, get an extra piece of wood to do a few practice cuts with. Also I ADORE your Kate Spade rose bowl – I’ve had my eye on the one with white spots for a while! Might have to try that DIY 🙂

I just love the diy headboard—it’s done very well!
It’s beautiful. I just finished working on one this weekend. I’ll be posting about it by the weekend. I decided to go for a straight line to keep it more modern. I also was a little scared to go for a shapely one. They are really easy to make.
LOL, that’s my favorite picture too – and what a cool headboard. The possibilities are endless when you design it yourself with YOUR favorite fabric.
I made that headboard last summer. Getting the fabric stretched over the straight horizontal part was a bitch! I almost ripped the fabric. But all in all it finally turned out fabulous.
