Crane & Canopy’s make your bed week is upon us once again and this time around I wanted to share some of my personal essentials for building the perfect bed!
No. 1. Foundation is key! Always make sure you test out your mattress when you are getting a new one. Everyone has different preferences so it’s key to get into the store and do some bed hopping. If you have inherited a mattress from your sister, parents, best friend, etc and it’s not to your liking I recommend mattress pillow tops. They range from $50-$120 and they can add a nice cushy layer to your bed and buy you some time from having to invest in a new mattress.
No. 2 Sleeping pillows: For sleeping pillows I again recommend that you go and test options. Jon and I both have very different tastes pillow wise. He loves something completely fluffy and I like something a bit firmer. We each have our own sleeping pillow that we picked out and then for the pillows that we use our pretty shams on I have the same style/firmness so it looks nice and equal on the bed.
No. 3 Sheets: I like to make things easy with sheets. I just use a fitted sheet and my two pillow shams. No flat sheet for me! Too much of a hassle. I love that with Crane & Canopy I have the option of ordering a set without a flat sheet, because typically I just toss them when I get a full set. I also like to get a bit fun with my sheets since I use a mainly white duvet set. I like a dose of pattern. It’s a happy surprise!
No. 4: Comforter/Duvet: I love using a down alternative comforter and duvet. I love how light yet warm down comforters are, but Jon hates getting stabbed by feathers so the down alternative is a perfect option for us. Plus they are both small enough that I can actually wash them at home. When I use to have the massive comforters that would come in a (dare I say it) a bed in a bag I could never wash it at home. Plus I love having a couple of duvet covers and rotating them for a different look. I’m itching to get the Page duvet because it’s reversible!
No. 5: Pillow Talk: As a designer you know I love a good pillow and back in the day aka before kids I use to have quite a bit of pillows on my bed, but now I’m down to just using 3 and I love it. 3 is the perfect option to give you a variety of pattern and size. I like going with 2 euro pillows that I have pillow covers made for and then a ready made lumbar pillow.
