In a home a staircase is often forgotten in decorating. I can admit that for my first year of living in my new home I didn’t really give it much thought. The stairs just got me from point A to point B. Now that in the stages of finalizing (for the time being) the rooms in my home I’ve had the staircase on my mind for the last couple of months.
My stairs are traditional wood stairs with the risers painted in white. I’ve been itching to do something to step them up a notch.
Traditionally most staircases get outfitted with a stair runner. I’m not a fan of the ones with oriental carpeting down the front, but I think I could get use to this:
It would probably be very comfy on my feet and help the dogs from sliding off the wood, but so not in my price range at the moment.
Another option would be to wallpaper the risers for an added impact. Lately I’ve been in love with all sorts of wallpaper, but if I wanted to use them in a room I would need to give up food shopping for quite some time to get the loot to pay for it all. Buying a roll or 2 of your favorite designer wallpaper will not break the bank and add some character to your stairs.
The cheapest option would be to simply either paint the risers, or a stair runner onto my existing stairs. I could either use some left-over paint or run to Home Depot and see what they have as their Oops paints and walk out with a gallon for $5!
After doing all my research I did finally pick a solution for what I want to do. I didn’t go with paint, wallpaper, or carpeting, but a little something else. It was relatively inexpensive and if I want a change it’s an easy fix.
Since we are suppose to have a rainy weekend I figured it would be a great time to get this project done. Fingers crossed it happens and I’ll be posting a before and after on Monday!
Oh, I love the runner in that first image–especially with the pops of pink in the foyer. And I love how whimsical the painted risers are! Have a great weekend.
One of my fave ideas for wooden stairs is to have a $5 or $10 dollar bill painted trompe l’oeil on the stair tread. I even wanted to try refinishing the wooden stair with a real bill underneath the layers of varnish. Just a quirky little trick…
However, I LOVE the painted riser pictures you feature.
I always thought is would be clever to have numbers stencil-ed(sp?) or number decals on each step counting up from 1 to the top stair. Would be very striking with a white stair and a bold black number… just an idea.
I love all of those options, I didnt know there were so many choices for stairs! And obvi one more because you didnt post what you did to your stairs. I cant wait to see what you end up doing- take lots of pics please!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
The time has come to finally share our new kitchen reveal. For those of you that have been with us from the beginning, we bought a house right before the pandemic hit. It was a total gut job from top to bottom. We started our demo and then the world shut down. Enter the delays […]
Picking out paint colors for a new home can be overwhelming. I find that many times when I meet with a new client the entire house is simply just painted white or a light gray. Now, I think there is a time and place for those colors, but with paint, there is just so much […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
