Ah this Tuesday morning is hitting me hard today. I’m totally in summer and vacation mode! I hope you all had a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I was lucky enough to have Jon on vacation from Thursday and while I wanted him to rest up he was in project mode so these last couple of days I believe I’ve been in Home Depot at least once a day.
Here are some sneak peeks into some projects that we started and fingers crossed will be finished up this coming weekend:
It all started my desire for a custom hamper. I hate wicker baskets/hampers, because they don’t really work with the look I have in our bedroom. I bought one like everyone else and it now always remains in the laundry room and sadly our dirty clothes just ends up tossed in a pile on the floor. Horrible. It’s my dirty little secret. Well I guess it’s no longer a secret.
For around $40 we picked up supplies to make a custom hamper that will fit perfectly in a nook and I can add nice trim to it and customize it!
Here is what we started with:
We ended up with this:
We just need to finish the top and get it all pretty and then I will post the full DIY steps.
That one little project lead us to pricing another project while we were there and since we went to Home Depot a million and one times this past weekend on one of our trips we actually purchased all of the wood we had priced out for this:
It’s the start of a new shed! We were going to buy one already made from Home Depot, but they were pricey. We were able to get supplies to make one ourselves for a little less than $250!
I tried to get a good before picture, but Jon started working on it when I jumped in the shower and told him to rest. I got out of the shower and walked past a window and saw that the massive bush that was next to the garage was now gone and he was working on a frame for the floor.
We still need to build the wall with the doors and the roof, but we are almost there! Again full DIY post will follow once it’s all finished up.
We did take some time off to enjoy some BBQ’s and even ended up at the beach one day!
Plus when the heat got to be a little too much for me I enjoyed the seating area in my office and curled up with Room (Thanks for all of the book recommendations. I loved it and already finished it.)
We also had a little excitement this weekend when we found a baby bird with an injured wing:
Isn’t he or she cute? All the baby does all day is chirp, chirp, chirp. We’ve been trying to feed it, give it water and keep it safe while it’s wing gets better.
What were you up to all weekend? Did any projects get tackled? Did you go away on vaca? Where you beach bound? Details please. 🙂
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
Is that your office?! Soooo great! Glad you liked Room– I saw somebody else rec’d The Historian– I LOVED that book, too. We spent the weekend getting everything ready for the installation of our new bathroom– sooo exciting. Can’t wait to see your finished hamper.
Great projects! I was pretty sure we could build a shed for a lot less than the pre-built ones at the big box stores and this will help me convince my husband. As for the bird, it probably doesn’t have an injured wing. It most likely fledged the nest early, perhaps due to some disturbance or a predation attempt. The parents are likely still around and will try to feed it if it doesn’t wander off too far from the nest site.
The wing looked injured the first day. Not sure if it was just because it was wet and looked really matted, but it seems to have fluffed up. He keeps trying to fly, but it’s just not happening. The birds keep coming by and checking on him and giving him food. So, we are just trying to keep him safe and protected from other animals while he figures out this whole flying thing. It’s so cute to see his Dad come up and check on him.
Wow – impressive work on the shed (and the hamper)… I wish we were that handy!
I also loved Room – I just read it for my book club. The Glass Castle is a great one – I saw that others recommended it.
I tackled a chair reupholstery project over the weekend… not quite done, but updates on my blog – http://www.12devonshire.blogspot.com. Good luck finishing up your projects!
You two might be the most productive couple I know. And that seating area — to die for! Your knack for pairing patterns is unparalleled in my book.
I never would have thought to DIY a hamper, but this may be just the solution for us. I’ve had a terrible time finding a two-section hamper in a size and style that fit our bathroom. Looking forward to seeing your tutorial!
I love the fabric you’ve used to cover your sofa. Just gorgeous! I can’t wait to get started on my own office, and I’ll be back here for inspiration.
Wow – you were busy! Can’t wait for all the deets on the hamper project!
Look at you and all these projects! LOVE the hamper idea- I hate the stupid wire one I have, I just keep it in the closet because its so ugly.
