Good design with kids in mind…
Can you have a pretty house with kids? Before becoming a parent I always thought of course you can. Time and time again I was always perplexed when clients with young kids always gave me a million and one reasons for not hanging drapes up or getting a new coffee table, etc. Now I have a 17 month old who thinks he is superman and I get it. I’m constantly getting Hudson down from a table and having an elephants smash into a million pieces has now become so routine that tears no longer form and everything simply gets cleaned up and thrown out.
That being said I still think it’s possible to have both good design and function in a house full of kids. After all part of what makes a house a home is the things we fill it with and who doesn’t want that. Years from now I want Hudson to see an elephant figurine and have him remember me and our house since I have them sprinkled throughout the house. So, is it possible to have good design with kids? Yes, it just takes a couple of extra steps.
Today Kirsten from 6th street design school is running a 2 week series on this subject and I was lucky enough to be part of it as one of her design experts. Fun, right?

Hudson is now in this stage (Climbing on everything on anything. Before this he was trying to ride Moo around the kitchen) so you know I’ll be full of good advice or that at least we are on the same boat. 🙂
My husband roller skated down the stairs into his parents living room once upon a time so I’m certain I’m in for a world of trouble.

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
