Fabrics are my favorite! I can look at new patterns day in and out. I love taking in the designs and really looking at them and appreciating what went into them. Then add in all of the different colorway options that are available and I can be distracted all day! Many times picking out fabrics is where I start when it comes to designing a space with a client. I source fabrics from all sorts of places and run the gamut from budget-friendly fabrics, to the trade designer fabrics and independent fabric designers. My taste typically disregards price and tends to run on the really pricey side. Imagine finally having to tell your husband to stop tossing that pillow around because the fabric alone cost $300. Yup, that happened to me. Luckily, I have a very understanding husband who understands my love for textiles! Of course, I can’t always go crazy with my selections which makes me have to get creative when I’m purchasing fabrics! One of my favorite sources to find designer fabrics on a budget is, New York Designer Fabric Outlet! I’m not sure but for the most part, their fabrics and wallpapers are from Quadrille, which happens to be one of my favorite designer fabric houses. They have fun with color, everything has a preppy or traditional nod to it and the patterns are timeless! Now, I have never found enough yardage to do a full room, but if you are wallpapering something small like a closet, accent wall, or even the back of a bookcase then you will have lots to pick from! Fabric wise there is always enough for at least a couple of pillows, small upholstery jobs like a dining chair or chairs or roman shades. I’m already brainstorming trying to figure out what I want to use in our new home.
HOUSE FABRIC. One of my go-to stops for the longest time. They have a good mix of fabrics and they separate it by colors, patterns of vendors. It’s super easy to navigate this site. Many of their fabrics are also to the trade fabric, but the more affordable options.
BUY FABRICS: Ok, so the site can be a bit overwhelming because there is a good amount of dark browns, heavy embroidery, gold aka a bit traditional and old-fashioned fabrics you can also find lots of fun patterns from PF. Kaufmann in the $10-$15 a range. So, it’s worth a look if you are a tight budget.
FABRIC GURU: My favorite online store to shop for crazy deals! I actually like being part of their newsletter, because I always know when a crazy sale is happening! I have gotten $1, $3 and $5 a yard deals and have also gotten great deals when buying remnant yardage. They also do a lot of 25%, 50% and 75% sales as well.
1502 FABRICS: Has a great array of fabrics in the $15-$30 a yard range. Lots of fun patterns and colors! Just do a little digging! They also have a remnant section where you can get crazy scores. It’s hit and miss. You just need to be on the lookout.
ONLINE FABRIC STORE: I head here when I’m looking for burlap, window drapery lining, and foam for upholstery, but they have a ton of fabric as well.
GREENHOUSE FABRICS: A massive inventory of home decor fabrics. The website is so easy to shop. You can search by color or performance grade. TO THE TRADE ONLY
RICH TEX FABRICS: Pretty mix of fabrics in the $20 price range.
BEST FABRIC STORE: Has a rainbow selection of upholstery velvet at less than $20 a yard.
JOANN: This isn’t just a source for craft fabric. They have a good amount of home decor fabric and when you can find a coupon code for 20%-40% for a cutting of fabric you can get a good deal.
CALICO CORNERS: Has really pretty fabrics and they do a good job of pairing fabrics that go together nicely. When they are having a sale it’s totally worth it to shop here. I have found them to have cheaper prices on Robert Allen than to the trade pricing.
LEWIS AND SHERON FABRICS: A good mix of solids and patterns at an affordable price point. I have used them quite a bit.
TONIC LIVING: A curated mix of chic fabric finds that give off a Studio McGee vibe!
I’m not a huge fan of finding fabric on Etsy and Spoonflower. I find it super overwhelming. So many options. When I do stumble upon some fabrics from there I pin them on my Pinterest board for fabric! Make sure you are following there as well for more of my favorites!
Hopefully, that’s a good jumping-off point for your fabric searches! When in doubt get help. It can be very overwhelming to find the perfect fabric. I do hourly consults all the time where the goal is simply fabric selections for a room. It’s well worth the time you will save on all that searching! I can even help get pillows or window treatments fabricated for you! If you are interested reach out to me via email camila@effortless-style.com. I swear we will have a lot of fun!
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
