I have lived in NY all of my life! Until I was twelve, I lived in downtown Manhattan, and from twelve on, I have lived in Nassau County, Long Island. We take adventures all of the time and I thought I had seen a lot of NY especially within its 5 boroughs, but I had never been to Rockaway Beach. Living so close to Jones Beach I never had a need to search out another beach. So, when my sister got a couple of days off from work and asked if I wanted to go check out the Rockaways I jumped at the chance! Rockaway Beach is in Queens, NY and it stretches 5.5 miles! Throughout the boardwalk, there are different food/restaurant options and amenities like bathrooms and playgrounds for the kids! The distance to the water is also super short! We had our little getaway at The Rockaway Hotel and it was the perfect oasis for a mini staycation in NY.
The hotel was designed by Morris Adjmi Architects and Curious Yellow Design. It’s a perfect mix of surfer meets chic boho meets Scandinavian design. Every little space is an Instagram post waiting to happen. I always say that I wish I could have multiple houses designed in different styles because I love so many! I’m typically not a fan of Scandinavian design because it’s a bit too cold for my liking, but in this space, it just worked. They did such an amazing job of adding so many layers with the texture from the rugs to the wood wall detailing and caned beds that it just works. Plus they sprinkled blush pink throughout the space, and it just made me smile. I love an unapologetic feminine moment.
The lobby is completely breathtaking and makes you feel like you are on vacation right away! It has so many different spots for you to just sit and people watch or read a book.
The prettiest tile floors lead to the guestrooms!
The rooms are just as lovely! They are a bit more clean-lined, but just as stunning!
I loved that wall treatment behind the bed!
The highlight of the hotel is the pool area!
You honestly don’t even need to leave the hotel. From lunch at the pool area to dinner at their restaurant called Margie’s where the pretty decor just continues!
I loved seeing the wood detailing from the guests’ rooms in the restaurant. What a cool alternative to wainscotting!
They even have a beautiful rooftop bar area with loads of seating and live music!
We had a really lovely getaway and the design totally inspired me! If you want to recreate some of the Rockaway Hotel decor in your own home here are some pieces to help you along the way!
I loved the mix of artwork throughout the space. Everything had a little beachy and surf nod to it that I really appreciated!

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
