Weekend Recap: Outdoor Playtime

This weekend we decided it was time to spruce up our outdoors. Our yard has always one of the troubling parts of our house. It’s on the large size, which is great, but our grass coverage is horrible. Parts of the yard get flooded and with two pups and an additional 2 furry visitors ( my parents dogs) there is a lot of grass that is kicked up.

This year though things are changing and our grass is looking lush. Due to the beautiful weather we headed out to LOWES (along with the entire population of Long Island. The store was packed) and picked up some supplies.

The grass was cut and we added some new plants to our garden. Remember how we made planter boxes last year.

We wanted something as close to free as we could get so we picked up some discarded pallets:

And gave them a coat of paint and set them into our garden section:

Our raspberries from last year already started growing like crazy:

Then we planted some cucumbers and a variety of tomatoes:

While we were busy with the plants I spotted another little gardener in the yard:

Along with another little ( ok perhaps he is a bit bigger) helper:

We were pretty happy with how the yard was looking so we bought out our outdoor seating and lighting.

We are planning on either building a deck out of TREX or doing a patio with pavers right by the back door. Which one would you do?

On Sunday we decided it was time to finally sit back and take in all of our hard work:

Moo decided to be lovey with me. Totally a random treat, because he is normally a loner. I eat it up when he actual acts like he likes us. :)

Bear decided to just hang out and roll around:

Jon decided to snap pictures of his boat. It’s a bit old (I prefer to call it vintage), but it’s in good space and always a fun outing during the summer. The past two summers we have been so busy with work/house that it hasn’t left the driveway. We are hoping to get it back in the water in the next coming weekends.

That was our weekend in a nutshell. I must say with all of the design work going on I’ve been a bit lax with our home projects, but all of the unfinished rooms in my home are driving me crazy! Don’t fret my pets I’m going to get back into and have some new projects and home tour coming soon!

*Power was gone for most of the day yesterday, but I’m happy to report it’s working again! Imagine having to get this post out on my phone. Madness.

  1. Great pics- your pups are so cute and my hubs would be jealous of that boat- I made him sell his sail boat a few years ago and I still don’t think he’s forgiven me- hehe.

  10. I love the planter idea! I wish I had the room but alas I make do with my pots.

  11. laxsupermom says:

Love the bright pop of color of your planter boxes! Such a fun touch. I think I’d do a paver patio over a trex one. But I may be a bit biased, because I have plans to replace our wood one with a paver one. Great pics! Thanks for sharing.

  12. The planters looks so cute in the blue. Nice job! Re: the patio, last year we had one put in with pavers (tumbled ones) as well as a seat wall and, when our old retaining wall started crumbling, a new retaining wall. I love it. I love the look. We considered doing flagstone or blue slate but it was simply too fancy for our house not to mention too expensive. For whatever reason, we never even considered a Trex deck. I guess we probably should have! Can’t wait to see how the deck/patio turns out!!

  13. What a brillant idea with the pallets! They look so good!
I love a deck because you don’t get as many bugs crawling on you (I’m a bug phobe) but the pation gives you more versatility for arranging because you can usually make it bigger. I also love slabs of stone with thyme or lavender growing inthe cracks. Hmmmm…. sorry, I am no help am I.

  14. Gaby says:

Oh! love love love this idea! I’m seriously considering for my backyard, I’ll start hunting some pallets today! Thanks so much for the idea!

  15. Lori says:

What kind of dog is Moo? He looks just like my Tibetan terrier, Murphy who I also call Moo :)

  16. Great idea with the pallets! Pups are adorable, too!
