Normally when I make brownies they come from a box. Years ago I tried making them from scratch, but it was a hassle and didn’t taste as good as my favorite boxed mix. During my sister’s bridal shower people raved about the food and I was particularly smitten by the brownies. Luckily for all of us the caterer shared the recipe with me.
At first I figured I would never even get around to making them, but when I looked at the ingredients list I realized I had everything in the house and I’m certain you will to. It was a short list of ingredients and nothing out of the ordinary. Totally effortless!
Browned Butter Brownies
Servings: Makes 16
- Nonstick vegetable oil spray
- 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1 1/4 cups sugar
- 3/4 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder (spooned into cup to measure, then leveled)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs, chilled
- 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon unbleached all purpose flour
Oven temperature: 325°F.
Bake time: 25 mins
Serving size: 16 / Baking pan: 8″ x 8″
-Melt butter in medium saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking until butter stops foaming and browned bits form at bottom of pan, stirring often, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
-In a bowl immediately add sugar, cocoa, 2 teaspoons water, vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stir to blend.
-Let cool 5 minutes (mixture will still be hot). Add eggs to hot mixture 1 at a time, beating vigorously to blend after each addition.
When mixture looks thick and shiny, add flour and stir until blended. Beat vigorously.
-Transfer batter to prepared pan. Place on bottom rack of oven.
-Bake for 25 mins. Let cool and then cut and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
In order to get nice cuts use a plastic knife! No metal at all.
Yum! I always like adding some fresh berries to my brownies to counter the richness of the chocolate.
