Today’s IN HER SHOES featured lady is Danika from Gorgeous Shiny Things and the amazing company, O’verlays! I simply adore everything Danika puts her hands on. I think she loves color and pattern play just as much as me and she is not shy with a paintbrush. I’ve been lucky enough to use Overlays in my projects and I can’t wait to use them in my own home as well. I think you will really enjoy her day!

Hi Effortless Style Readers! I am Danika from Gorgeous Shiny Things.
Welcome to a day in my life. The majority of days you can find me sitting here
in my office for most of the day…
(I tried to make it look all carefree and glamorous for you)
but this is the rest of the story…
I am an early riser. If I want to get things done I need to be with kids.
My husband and I have been getting up around 5 AM lately to do “Insanity”.
(Sounds crazy dirty right?)
We have been doing the “Insanity” workout videos (the ones you see on the infomercial) for about 6 weeks now in attempts to lose the winter layer we put on and shrink my “office chair” butt
(see above photo).
I will spare you the pathetic images of that.
We entertain ourselves by doing voices for all the people in the video while we workout.
Once that is over it is all about COFFEE!
I’m an addict. Drink almost a full pot myself. Bad.
Then we catch an amazing sunrise in the back yard and see our little turkey friend “Anna”
(my youngest named her) strolling through the yard.
There is usually a big flock of them that come through, but lately it is just this lonely little one.
By now it is close to 7AM. Time to wake the kids.
They are not early risers on the weekdays, but for some reason like to get up before sunrise on Saturday and Sunday. We usually drag them out of bed and they quickly run to the couch or our bed and try to fall back to sleep. They are very dramatic about the whole having to wake up thing. The second picture is an older one, but it shows one of them pretending to sleep at the breakfast table… Classic.
Lunches packed, kids dressed and fed we head to school and do drop off.
It is now almost 8:30 and I go home and start laundry, pick up a bit and then head “to the office”.
This is where you can find me most of the day. I have two desks. One for CAD, the other for everything else. I run the custom department at O’verlays, so first thing I do is check emails and do quotes. I then work on mock ups and designs, get files to our shop to be cut, etc. I then try to go through my regular email and squeeze in a blog post- but unfortunately not today…
Cheryle, my business partner, comes over at 9:30 and we have a meeting about sample kits and talk biz. My niece Ashley stops by at 10:30 to run. We have a 5K coming up. She has been a good girl and training, while I haven’t. The “Insanity” videos are plenty in my mind.
We run, I suck wind. I am pooped!
I shower, start working on adding some more storage to my office and then it is time to get Joe from Preschool. I can usually get some projects done with just him home. I finish hanging my cabinets and start painting them, he does some “crafts”
and then we bring our seedlings we started to the garden to plant….
By now it is time to get Thomas from school.
We walk down the street to go play at the beach, start homework and go to Karate class.
I finish my IKEA cabinet hack, unload a dishwasher, make dinner and grab a glass of wine and try to catch up on emails…
(Two days a week I have a sitter that comes in the afternoon from 1-5,
so those days are work focused and I get tons done. Thank goodness for babysitters! )
7:30. It is time to wind down. My husband plays with the kids before bed. I actually sneak right into bed at this point because I am exhausted. I click on the tube to get my dose of reality TV and I hear little feet running down the hall…
The kids always have way more energy than us, and try to convince us that they should be able to stay in our bed and watch TV. Joe even grabs the remote and changed the channel to one of his shows.
That is short lived. 8:30. My husband carries them back to bed and it is lights out!
I am already asleep at this point!
And then it is Groundhog Day all over again.
Thanks so much for inviting me over Camila and letting me share my day!

Whew! I’m exhausted no wonder Danika crawls into bed at 7:30pm. I think I would have to do the same. Plus how sweet are her boys! Love the fake sleeping at the kitchen table. My sisters and I do that to our parents all the time when we don’t want to do something. 🙂 Thanks Danika!
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
You crack me up. I do Insanity as well and curse Shaun T. every time he claims he “is loving it.” Wow. Love the glamorous candid photo of you working. So real life. Love you Danika!
holy cow, she makes me feel really lazy. great post!
5 AM ? That is Insane ! Love her though…..
Danika, you get so much done in a day! I sometimes fall asleep with my son even without the running and workouts! Oh, and that Ikea hack looks great.
What a busy day! I am amazed at how much she gets done in one day! Love the hot pink office space!
Wow, that’s a lot in one day! I love O’verlays. Such a clever product!
She is superwoman! I cant believe she runs a business, runs her house, takes care of the boys AND has time to do all the of the amazing DIY projects she does- I’m tired just reading all about it 🙂
Thanks so much for having me Camila! It is so ironic to have my “average” day post after the day I had yesterday, but I will take it any day!
Oh, and I just want to let everyone know I rarely pull a 2 a day workout. That just happened to be a rarity. And why I passed out by 8!

How good is INSANITY! I just enjoy the shirtless men and laugh at how serious some of them are. It is fun though!
Danika is the best!!! She’s a magician…so inspiring. Thanks for sharing a day in her life. 🙂
