One of my favorite activities is hitting my favorite thrift stores! Ideally, I like to go once a week and look for vintage pieces for styling, furniture pieces that need a new home and pieces that are in need of a little DIY magic! I always hit the tablecloth, napkin and fabric area in thrift stores. You never know what you are going to find! I have found some amazing yardage of fabric, tablecloths for any and every occasion and oh so many cloth napkins. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a bunch of pretty white cloth napkins. Some were solid white napkins from a big-box retailer and the rest were vintage finds with embroidered floral details. There was only one issue…a couple little stains sprinkled throughout the napkins. I immediately knew the perfect fix, tie-dye! Tie-dye is really on-trend at the moment. It’s everywhere in fashion at the moment, which means you are going to quickly see it all over the home decor world.
Here are my goodies before they got their dose of tie-dye action. Along with my cloth napkins, I also did a hat for Hudson and a button-down shirt for myself. For the cloth napkins with the embroidered napkins, I did a simple starburst pattern where you just twist your napkin in a spiral and then rubberband it into sections. For the second set of cloth napkins, I did an accordion fold and then added 4 rubber bands to make a sort of stripe pattern.
I used Tulip Tie Dye kit and I really loved the way the colors came out. The instructions don’t tell you to wet your fabric beforehand, but I find that it makes it easier for the color to adhere to the fabric. When I tried placing the dye on the try fabric it just rolled off the fabric.
After I added the dye to everything I placed everything in zip lock bags and let it set for 24 hours. Then you simply rinse your fabric until the water runs clear. Last step is to place your newly tie dyed pieces into the wash with hot water!
Look at how the pretty my embrioidered cloth napkins came out!!!
I think it looks so pretty on the embroidered flower. It gives my granny chic vintage cloth napkins a new rock and roll sort of vibe to them.
I had to set up a table with them and see how they looked in action.
I’m totally in love with them! The striped cloth napkins also came out fab. Each one is a little different and I actually think they would look awesome framed as artwork!
I went with an aqua blue, purple, black and pops of pink.
My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
Oh, how I love your napkins! I’ve tried recreating the pink design, but I can quite get it right. Can you please explain how you tied it??
I just swirled them with a fork and then added rubber bands.
