Back in the 90’s shiny brass, carpeting in bathrooms and ceiling fans were all the rage. Ask any interior designer about their thoughts on ceiling fans and you will typically be met with a face of shock and awe. For the longest time designers have felt that ceiling fans have no place in a home. However, homeowners love them and as the years have gone by lighting companies have gotten savvy and we are now lucky enough to have a vast assortment of ceiling fans that will easily get an interior designer seal of approval! Now, that you know that ceiling fans are no longer a designer faux paux I want to share when and how you should use them in your home.
One of my favorite online retailers with an immersive inventory of fans and detailed guides to help you find the best ceiling fan for your home is LUMENS. I ended up at LUMENS because I was searching for a new ceiling fan for my parents’ kitchen. I google search lead me to their fan finder guide which I found extremely helpful and after viewing all of the beautifully curated lighting pieces I actually reached out to them about working together. I wanted to spread the word and happily, they did too and hired me for this sponsored post. I think ceiling fans always come off as taboo so, I really wanted to break it down with my tips for when and how to use and put my interior designer stamp of approval on some of my favorites!
No. 1 Isotope Ceiling Fan works if you have a bigger bedroom that you are working with. It’s has a clean and simple design that would work in an array of design styles.
No. 2 Discus Trio Max Ceiling Fan: I lean traditional with my design style so, I tried to find fans that would work best in that style. I love the color and style of this one. I think the rounded blades lean towards a more traditional design and I could see it working in hallways or bedrooms.
No. 3 Prizzm Ceiling Fan: If you really want your ceiling fan to disappear than pick out a fan with clear acrylic (lucite) blades like this one. Totally chic and sleek.
No. 4: South Beach Ceiling Fan is perfect for a room that doesn’t need the fan for lighting. It has a slim and sleek profile and will disappear on your ceiling.
No. 5 Anslee Flushmount Ceiling Fan is the best bang for your buck! It’s only $167.47 and has a stylish retro design to it. I love the globe light and the two-tone look to it.
No. 6 Bayview Ceiling Fan makes me think of something that would be in the Beverly Hills hotel. It’s perfect for an outdoor porch, but honestly, I would probably put it in a preppy bedroom as well.
No. 7: Advocate Ceiling Fan: I like the clean lines on this one and the mix of the light wood and silver. I think it would work great in a home that is coastal or as a modern farmhouse vibe to it.
No. 8 Ridley II Ceiling Fan is perfect if your style leans mid-century modern. I love the warm wood tone and the curves in the blade.
No. 9 Curva Sky Hugger Ceiling Fan has the right amount of whimsy that I love for a playroom or kids room. I love the curvy nature of the base.
No. 10 Cranbrook Low Profile Ceiling Fan is perfect for a nursery. It comes in this dreamy pale pink and mint along with a black and gray. The design is perfect and babies love the spinning of a ceiling and help get their room to the ultimate temperature (68-72 degrees) for getting a good night’s sleep.
Tip 1: I’m typically a more is more kinda girl. Why not be a little extra and get that wallpaper, add banding to a solid roman shade and have more decorative pillows then one could ever need, but when it comes to ceiling fans, I take a less is more approach. If it’s too big and ornate than it’s going to distract from the room instead of adding to the design of the room.
Tip 2: Pay attention to your home’s design style. I don’t like to mix design styles when it comes to ceiling fans. If your home is more industrial farmhouse then stick with something in that style. If it has notes of mid-century design throughout then go with a mid-century design. Traditional design can be a little hard to come by in ceiling fans without going really ornate. If your home is traditional then I suggest going as simple as possible and having it blend into your ceiling and disappear.
Tip 3: 7ft or higher is the key height for ceiling fans. Make sure you have enough space to allow for the proper placement of the fan and still be far away from the tops of people’s heads! Ideally, a fan should be 7ft-9ft above the floor and installed 10″-12″ below the ceiling.
Tip 4: Spaces, where I think ceiling fans do the best in a home, are the kitchen, staircases with high ceilings, wide hallways, and bedrooms especially nurseries and kids’ rooms. My kids run hot super hot and instead of having to blast the AC on nights when it’s not needed a fan will go wonders to cool down a room by 8 degrees.
Tip 5: If your home does not have the space or need for central air or wall AC units then fans are an amazing product for your home. They will save you close to 40% in AC bills and can even help you with heating in the colder months. If you reverse the fan rotation from counterclockwise to clockwise it will make the warm air in the ceiling float down to the rest of the room.

My living room is one of the rooms that evolved drastically from when we first moved one. Originally I painted the walls chocolate brown and did accents of white, blue and orange. That lasted maybe 2 years.
Our dining room sat empty for months. Okay maybe it was empty for just a handful of weeks and then we couldn’t take it anymore and put in a folding table and plastic outdoor chairs, but in my mind that was still empty.
On the main floor of our house we have a Florida room. Being that it’s a Florida room it is a considered a 3 season room, because there is no heat in the room. The previous owners used it as an indoor patio with outdoor furniture and it looked like this when we moved in.
In our new home, the basement was completely unfinished. It was literally one of those dark spaces that you see in horror movies and are terrified of getting locked into. However, with the square footage in this house, I knew I needed to make the basement another workable and liveable floor of the house instead […]
What to look for when it comes to picking out kitchen appliances: Leave room in your budget for appliances. When it comes to kitchen renovations everyone knows that the cabinetry and the labor of demoing and installing cabinetry is going to eat a lot of your budget. However, the second most expensive part of a […]
I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that designing a kitchen is an overwhelming undertaking. I’m an interior designer and even I find it stressful to iron out all of those details. So, when it comes time to design a kitchen I always like to partner with a kitchen designer to make sure I’m remembering […]
