A couple of months ago I started to work on a former clients basement. It’s almost finished with all of the main pieces sorted out and it’s now time to finish up with accessories. Until the final photos are ready I thought I would share one of my favorite parts of the space.
When you walked down to the basement you were originally met with this:
You are now met with this:
Now I must admit I have many favorites in this space, but I think what makes the space is the x-benches. We didn’t want to break the bank with upholstered x-benches, but we still wanted a custom look.
Enter this plain jane x-bench for only $86:
I knew right away it had potential and with a can of my favorite spraypaint and two yards of striped fabric plus a quick trip to my local embroidery shop we were met with this:
Perfection!
Total Cost Breakdown:
X-bench $86 (free shipping) x 2: $ 172
Spraypaint $8 -only 1 can (You can find spraypaint for a lot less I just have a good experience using Montana Gold and it’s a bit pricey.
Fabric $20 (2 yards plus shipping)
Embroidery $15 per bench
Total for each bench: $115!

Looks really great! I must ask, is that table from Overstock? I’ve been contemplating purchasing it. How is the quality?
Thanks Amanda. It’s actually a Parson console from West Elm. I’ve never used the overstock look a like for a client or my own personal use.
What a great bright addition to a basement! I can’t wait to see the rest of the space. And I love the color you used on the walls.
Love it! Where is the mirror from?
love it! i need to try this too now!
Agreed! Those benches are fabulous!!!
Pink and navy are perfect together – a combination I’ve loved foreverrrr. Would also like to hear more about that beautiful mirror.

Those x benches are a steal…is the upholstered top just screwed on?? I’m hoping this will be an easy recover job!
It’s just a screw. It’s super easy!

I love the color on the walls… can you tell me what you used?
What a beautiful transformation! I love the white anchoring the space with a splash of color on the “X” benches. Those seem like an easy DIY project for such a beautiful look!
